Baum named chair of APS Nutrition Physiology Research Interest Group

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Jamie I. Baum, assistant professor of nutrition for the University of
Arkansas System Division of Agriculture, has been named chair of the of the Nutrition
Physiology Research Interest Group for the American Physiological Society.
Baum is director of the Nutrition and Metabolism Laboratory as part of the Center for Human
Nutrition and Institute of Food Science and Engineering in the department of food science in
both the Division of Agriculture and the Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life
Sciences.
Baum began her duties as chair July 1. The purposes of this interest group are to:






Facilitate the growth and dissemination of translational research with a focus on
physiology and nutrition, including the roles of various nutrients on obesity, diabetes and
metabolic syndrome,
Be available to all members of the society with an interest in physiology and nutrition
research in any area of physiology or pathophysiology,
Assist the society through representation on the Joint Program Committee (JPC) to
select and promote at least one physiology/nutrition-related research symposium or
featured topic at the annual Experimental Biology meeting,
Actively interact with other scientific societies who are part of Experimental Biology as
well as sections and other interests groups within APS whose members have an interest
in physiology and nutrition-related research,
Nominate individuals for membership on society committees, and
Recognize members who have made significant contributions to the affairs of the
interest group and the APS.
Baum’s research addresses basic and applied research challenges related to dietary protein
intake and its impact on body composition, energy metabolism and metabolic health using a
molecule-to-man approach.
Her research goals include determining the role of dietary protein in skeletal muscle energy
metabolism and defining the role of dietary protein in metabolic health throughout the lifecycle.
She disseminates research findings through the division’s Cooperative Extension Service.
