Food Chain Activity Teacher Guidelines Grades K – 4 Food Chain Activity is a way for younger students to explore how members of an ecosystem interact to obtain the energy they need to live and grow. We all know that the sun is the source of most of the energy on earth. Without sunlight, there would be no plants. Without plants, we wouldn’t have all the wonderful biodiversity that exists on earth today. This kit will help students understand how each organism, no matter how small, strange, smelly, slimy, scary, spotted or sublime, has an important part to play. Students can color and take home a series of nesting tubes that model “consumption” at each trophic level in the food chain. It’s like Russian dolls with an ecological twist! Food Chain Learning Outcomes Students will: • Identify the organisms represented in this ecosystem • Understand the complex interactions of the various components of an ecosystem. • Describe energy flow in an ecosystem from the sun and inorganic compounds, to autotrophs (producers), and then to various heterotrophs (consumers) • Predict a trend and recognize the relationship between the growth of a population from one trophic level to another • Recognize that human activities are constantly causing changes in the environment, causing some species to die out and others to flourish HCPS III Benchmarks SC.K.3.1 SC.1.3.1 SC.2.3.1 SC.3.3.1 SC.4.3.1 SC.4.5.2 SC.4.5.3 Identify similarities and differences between plants and animals Identify the requirements of plant and animals to survive (e.g. food, air, light, water) Describe how animals depend on plants and animals Describe how plants depend on animals Describe how simple food chains and food webs can be traced back to plants Describe the roles of various organisms in the same environment Describe how different organisms need specific environmental conditions to survive Nā Honua Mauli Ola Guidelines 4.7 Utilize their knowledge, skills, and ways of knowing from their own culture to learn about the larger world community
