But it is not all disaster and catastrophe. Many successful development efforts at ‘the margins’ illegal; and rarely in line with standard development prescriptions. If we shift our gaze from the capital cities to the region very different perspective emerges. These are the places where pastoralists live. They have for centuries struggled with dr resourceful, entrepreneurial and innovative peoples. Yet they have been ignored and marginalised by the states that cont agencies who are supposed to help them. This book argues that, while we should not ignore the profound difficulties of cr Horn of Africa, there is much to be learned from development successes, large and small. Such climatic alterations and variability have inherent implications for land-use and land-cover over th using multi-temporal satellite imagery from three sites along the livestock routes. The major trends were drastic conversio scale mechanized agricultural land. This resulted in a progressive loss and degradation of grazing area in the entire region may cause an irreversible loss of biodiversity and a depletion of other ecological services provided by natural vegetation.
