Dzud is the Mongolian term for a winter weather disaster in which deep snow, severe cold, or other conditions render for

Item 15: Pastoralism and Development in Africa: Dynamic Change at the Margins
Once again, the Horn of Africa has been in the headlines. And once again the news has been bad: drought, famine, conflic
of blame has been pointed in numerous directions: to the changing climate, to environmental degradation, to overpopula
agency failures, and more. But it is not all disaster and catastrophe. Many successful development efforts at ‘the margins’
illegal; and rarely in line with standard development prescriptions. If we shift our gaze from the capital cities to the region
very different perspective emerges. These are the places where pastoralists live. They have for centuries struggled with dr
resourceful, entrepreneurial and innovative peoples. Yet they have been ignored and marginalised by the states that cont

Horn of Africa, there is much to be learned from development successes, large and small. This book will be of great intere

It has not been easy to capture landscape level grazing parameters through participatory assessment and monitoring of ra

Item 18: Implications of Land Development on Nomadic Pastoralism: Ecological Relaxation and Biosocial Diversity in Hu
Nomadic pastoralism is an ancient subsistence strategy, historically balanced and in continuity with sedentary societies. S
because of ecological disasters, economic opportunities, urbanization, and government policy. In this paper, I examine the
nomadic pastoral populations in Asia, Africa, and the Middle East, using biogeographic methodology to further explore th

Livestock keeping is often portrayed as a pathway out of poverty, particularly for the landless poor. However, in recent ye
approaches to poverty alleviation for livestock keepers are failing to produce the promised benefits, with producers facing
