Quarter 3 Instructional Pacing for First Grade

We will read fiction stories and write about how the
character feels in the story and why the characters
feelings might change.
Reading Workshop
Readers use strategies to figure out tricky words.
Writing Workshop
We will be editing small moment stories to include
proper capitalization and punctuation.
Students will be solving missing addend problems
using a chosen strategy (draw a picture, number
line, fact families, part-part-whole)

We will be studying rocks and minerals. We will
discuss how they are formed, the types of rocks, and
how we use rocks.

We will be studying Groundhog’s Day and will do this
by reading both fiction and non-fiction books about
groundhogs. (focus: author’s purpose)
Reading Workshop
During reader’s workshop, we will review the
strategies that good readers use when they come to
a tricky word.

We will be working on editing our small moment
stories and making sure that they contain complete
sentences with proper capitalization and
punctuation.
Math
We will be practicing telling time to the hour and to
the half hour. Important vocabulary: half past, half
till, hour hand, minute hand

We will be studying rocks and minerals. We will
discuss how they are formed, the types of rocks, and
how we use rocks.

Aloud
We will be comparing and contrasting different
versions of The Gingerbread Man story. We will
create and use a Venn diagram to help us compare
and contrast the adventures of the characters.

During reader’s workshop, we will review the
strategies that good readers use to read fluently.
Writing Workshop
We will be working on editing our small moment
stories and making sure that they contain proper
punctuation and the components of a sentence.
Math
We will start to work with and identify fractions.
Students will partition circles and rectangles in two
and four equal shares (halves, fourths, quarters).

We will learn about the continents and oceans and
label them on a map.

Aloud
We will use what read from a book and our
background knowledge to make inferences about
the text.

Readers read different genres to learn more!

We will be writing our own gingerbread stories and
using the writing process to plan, edit, and publish
our stories.
Math
We will practice mentally taking 10 more, adding 10,
minus 1, plus 1 to a number.
Science
We will be conducting our experiment for the
science fair and learning about the scientific
method.

We will be staring a snowman unit and will practice
retelling, sequencing, and comparing/contrasting.
Reading Workshop
During reader’s workshop, we will choose books on
topics that interest us and we will be finding facts by
reading across genres.
Writing Workshop
We will be working on writing individual gingerbread
stories. Students will model their stories after the
gingerbread stories that we have been reading the
last two weeks

We will be practicing adding and subtracting
multiples of ten 33-20, 45+30 (without regrouping or
borrowing)

looking at character traits, creating silly stories and
making personal connections with Dr. Seuss stories.

character traits as well.

We will be continuing to work on writing individual
gingerbread stories. Students will model their stories
after the gingerbread stories that we have been
reading the last two weeks.

We will be using place value to add two digit
numbers without regrouping.

This week we will be looking at March themed
poetry and responding to the poems in a variety of
ways including predicting, sequencing, visualizing
and looking at spelling patterns.

to understand unknown words.

This week students will be identify what an opinion is
and forming an opinion on different topics and
providing a reason why they feel that way.
Math
This week we will be working on adding and
subtracting 10 from numbers using a hundreds chart
as well as identifying what comes before and after a
number.

landforms (mountains, beaches, canyons, plains,

This week we will be reading Karma Wilson’s Bear
Series and students will be reviewing several skills

Readers will practice reading with expression to help
them understand the text.

This week students will be identify what an opinion is
and forming an opinion on different topics and
providing a reason why they feel that way.

We will be wrapping up adding and subtracting 10
from numbers using a hundreds chart as well as
identifying what comes before and after a number.
We will then move into solving missing subtrahend
math problems. This including problems such as 12__= 4 and ___- 8= 3.
Science
We will learn about the rotation of the earth and
moon around the sun.

Aloud
We will be reading nonfiction books about animals
and finding important details (main idea,
summarizing, and text features).
Reading Workshop
Readers use their expression to show the tone and
feelings in the story.
Writing Workshop
We will be using nonfiction facts from animal books
to write our own animal book about a chosen
animal.
Math
We will be using the equal sign to see if equations
are true or false. We will be comparing two digit
numbers.
Science
We will be learning about the phases of the moon.
