PRIMARY CARE A t Texas Tech’s Department of Family Medicine, we offer sports medicine in a primary care setting. Our primary care services include caring for recreational athletes and those with shoulder or knee pain that may not be sports related. SPORTS MEDICINE W e offer the following Sports Medicine services for all ages: §§ Concussion evaluation and management §§ Evaluation and treatment of acute musculoskeletal injuries of all kinds, including sports-related injuries §§ Acute fracture diagnosis and management, including splinting and casting §§ Joint injections for arthritis and other conditions, including viscosupplementation (Synvisc, Euflexxa) for knee arthritis §§ Referrals for physical therapy and occupational therapy, as needed for rehabilitation from injury §§ Consultation with orthopedic surgeons, when needed TO FIT YOUR NEEDS O ur sports medicine physicians are team doctors for the Texas Tech Athletic Department, and we can provide care for you. We are located on the First Floor of the Medical Pavilion in the Family Medicine Clinic at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center. To schedule an appointment, please call 806743-2757 and ask for an appointment in the Sports Medicine clinic. If you are not already an established patient at Texas Tech Physicians of Lubbock, you may need a referral from your primary care physician. Mitchell grew up in El Paso, TX. She received her BS from UTEP where she was involved in sports medicine as a scholarship sponsored athletic trainer for four years. After teaching high school and working for the El Paso ISD as an athletic trainer, she enrolled in medical school at Texas Tech. Dr. Mitchell gained further experience in musculoskeletal injuries during her seven years of active duty in the US Army. Dr. Mitchell returned to Texas Tech in 2003 as a faculty member in the Family Medicine Residency program. She is board-certified in Sports Medicine and is the Sports Medicine Fellowship Program Director. David Edwards, MD D r. Edwards is a native of El Paso, TX. He graduated from UTEP before attending the Texas Tech School of Medicine. Dr. Edwards completed residency training in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine and fellowship training in Sports Medicine at the University of Kentucky. He was in private practice in Topeka, KS before returning to TTUHSC to join the Sports Medicine faculty in 2009. His special interests include the geriatric population and athletes with disabilities. Dr. Edwards is board-certified in Sports Medicine and is the Associate Sports Medicine Fellowship Program Director. D r. Paxton is a native of Lubbock. He completed a BS degree from Abilene Christian University. Dr. Paxton received his medical degree from UTHSC in San Antonio, and he completed residency training in Family Medicine at TTUHSC in Lubbock. After spending 15 years in private practice, Dr. Paxton joined the Family Medicine faculty at TTUHSC. Dr. Paxton is board-certified in Sports Medicine and in Adolescent Medicine. Jimmy Gonzales, MD Rony Skaria, MD Texas Tech Primary Care Sports Medicine Sports Medicine Fellows D r. Gonzales graduated from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. He completed Family Medicine training at Texas A&M/Scott and White in Temple, where he was Chief Resident. D r. Skaria is a graduate of Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. He completed Pediatric Medicine training at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center in San Antonio. Care specialized to your needs
