2.4 Practice Task Basketball Players Name: _____________________________________________ Date: _______ 1. Buay, Abdi, and Ellyse are doing a research project on the number of basketball players showing up for practice every day. They decide to record the number of players at practice on seven random days. Day 2 3 5 7 13 13 19 Buay’s Data Number of Players 15 12 14 11 15 14 10 Abdi’s Data Number of Day Players 1 9 6 14 7 12 7 11 9 13 14 13 20 15 Which table(s) could not represent a function? Explain your reasoning. Day 4 8 10 11 15 18 27 Ellyse’s Data Number of Players 10 15 9 11 12 10 14 2. Buay goes to the store to buy basketballs and shoes for the game this weekend. This situation can be represented by the system of inequalities below that would give the acceptable number of basketballs and shoes that could be purchased. Let x equal the number basketballs and y equal the number of shoes. 𝑦 > 4𝑥 − 3 2 𝑦 ≤− 𝑥+3 3 𝑥≥2 𝑦≥0 Label and graph the system of inequalities shading only the solution set. Identify and list x and y intercepts. (A.REI.11/Claim 1) 3. As the end of the season is approaching, the students noticed that the number of fans were increasing and the players in study hall were decreasing. The number of fans at a game on any given day can be modeled using the equation: 𝑦 = 50 + 7𝑥. The equation that would represent the number of students in study hall on any given day, is 𝑦 = 60(0.93)𝑥 . In both equations, x represents the number of days and y represents the number of people. Graph and label this system of equations in the first box. Approximate the day(s) when there are an equal number of fans and students in study hall. Round your answer(s) to the nearest whole number. Write your answer in the second box. 4. When purchasing the basketballs and shoes, Buay always buys 3 more basketballs than shoes. A basketball cost $14 and a pair of shoes costs $40. Coach only wants him to spend a total of $250 for basketballs and shoes. Define your variable(s) and write a system of equations representing the information. Show all steps using your system to determine the basketballs and shoes he purchased. 5. At the end of the basketball season the boys and girls teams through a joint party to celebrate. They invite their loyal fans from the season as well as their families. This year they are planning to have El Kiosko cater their party. Initially they order 60 chicken burritos and 70 beef burritos and pay $780. More fans show up than they expect so they place a second order of burritos. This time they get thirty chicken burritos and forty two beef burritos for $595. Let 𝑥 equal the cost of chicken burritos and 𝑦 equal the cost of beef burritos. 60𝑥 + 70𝑦 = 780 30𝑥 + 42𝑦 = 595 Coach want to know how much the cost is for one chicken burrito and one beef burrito. Abdi decides to multiply the top equation by -1 and the bottom equation by 2 and then add the two equations together. Ellyse says she will multiply the top equation by -3 and the bottom equation by 5 then add the results together. Determine if Abdi and Ellyse’s approaches both result in the same solution. Show all work to support your decision.
