Final Exam Review
Know the definition of the following terms. This part of the final will be matching.
Thesis statement: Explains to the reader the main idea of the essay and the writer’s opinion on that idea
Adverbs: Tell how, where, when, and to what extent (how much)
Declarative sentence: A sentence that is a statement
Interrogative Sentence: A sentence that is a question
Imperative Sentence: A sentence that is a command
Exclamatory Sentence: A sentence that expresses a strong feeling
Adjective: A part of speech that describes a noun or pronoun
Verb: A part of speech that expresses an action in a sentence
Linking Verb: A verb that links the subject with either a noun or pronoun
Proper Noun: A noun that names specific people, places or things
Pronoun: A word that takes the place of nouns, they agree in numbers and gender
Concrete Noun: Nouns that can be seen. Ex: book, car, chair
Common Noun: A noun that does not name specific people, place, or things
Abstract Noun: Nouns that cannot be seen. Ex: love, grace, sadness
Contraction: Combining two words to make a new one by dropping some letters and adding an apostrophe
Elements of Poetry
Be able to identify an example or meaning of the following literary elements covered during the poetry unit.
Hyperbole:
extravagant exaggeration used as a figure of speech

Consonance: a repetition of consonants esp. as an alternative to rhyme
Rhyme: The use of words that rhyme in poetry, especially at the end of lines
Assonance: repetition of vowels especially as an alternative to rhyme
Metaphor: a figure of speech in which a word for one idea or thing is used in place of another to suggest a likeness between them
Simile: a figure of speech where two things are compared using the words “like” or “as”
Personification: giving human characteristics to non-human objects
Stanza: a group of lines that form a part of a poem
Common Nouns
You will need to understand what common nouns are and be able to identify common nouns within sentences. There
will be 5 questions over this.
Common noun definition: words that are used to name general items rather than specific ones

You will need to know the difference between singular, plural, and possessive nouns. You will need to be able to identify
which of the following categories a specific noun in a sentence falls under. There will be five questions over this.

of four sentences. There will be 5 questions like this.
Parts of Speech
You will need to know the difference between a noun, verb, adjective, conjunction, pronoun, and preposition. There will
be 5 sentences where you have to identify which part of speech an underlined word is. Hint* look over linking verbs
also.
Noun: a word used to identify a person, place, or thing
Verb: a word used to describe an action
Adjective: a word used to describe an adjective
Conjunction: a word used to connect clauses or sentences or to coordinate words in the same clause
Pronoun: a word that can function by itself as a noun phrase
Preposition: a word used to link nouns, pronouns, or phrases to other words within a sentence
