Part 3
Developed and developing countries
There are developed and developing countries on our planet. To work out if a country is
developed or developing we use ___________. There are three main types of indicators
used: economic indicators, social indicators and educational indicators.
Economic Indicators
Economic indicators show the amount of __________ a country makes. GDP,
__________________________, is the figure which shows the total value of all _______ and
services produced in a country.
Social Indicators
Social indicators are another way of ____________ whether a country is developed or
developing. Three key social indicators are birth rate, infant mortality rate and life
expectancy.
The birth rate tell us how many babies are born to every __________ people in a country.
The ______________________________ shows how many babies or infants die before the
age of one, out of every 1000 babies born.
The life expectancy figure indicates what age people live to ______________.
Educational Indicators
Another way of measuring a country’s development is through educational indicators. Three
key educational indicators are a country’s figures for equality of education, years of
schooling and literacy rate.
Equality of education shows whether ________ get as much schooling as _______. Years of
schooling tells us at what age anyone _________ school. The literacy rate demonstrates the
percentage of all people who can _______________________.
Developed or Developing?
Until recently the division between developed and developing countries was marked by
drawing an imaginary line across the map called the ___________________. This line shows
the northern hemisphere as __________ and the southern hemisphere as __________
except Australia and New Zealand. It is a __________________ and not a perfect model.
The United Nations use the HDI or _______________________________ to define a
country’s development. The HDI is a useful scale to distinguish between developing and
developed countries and is more _____________ than the Brandt Line model. HDI is
calculated using three key indicators of human development: Gross National Product, (this is
GDP + income from people making their money overseas) life expectancy and years of
schooling.
All these positions are changing and could reverse completely as the years go by. All the
countries of the world are at different levels of development.

Click on the following link which provides further details of the HDI from countries around
the world:

You must now choose two countries to compare. For one of the countries, you could choose
the country where you were born or perhaps the country where your parents were born. Do
not choose two countries from the same HDI category.
Once you have chosen your two countries, complete the table below:
Country

Life expectancy at

Infant mortality rate
