STATE OF EMERGENCY PRODUCTIONS
Project Manager Job Description
Areas of responsibility:
The Project Manager supports the role of the Artistic Director, Finance Director and Music Director (for
specific projects) and is responsible for managing the wide ranging project portfolio of State of
Emergency, which includes, touring, educational, professional development and one-off events.
Full time position
Salary: £25k
Skills required:
Project management and administrative skills
 Excellent arts administration and project management skills
 Familiarity with Arts Council England’s Strategic Plan for the Arts
 Excellent communication and written skills
 Excellent computer skills including problem troubleshooting and basic computer maintenance
 Experience of line managing artists and other staff
 Efficient and thorough working practice
 Awareness of company structures
 To lead on contract negotiation and retain overall management of productions, projects and
tours
 In partnership with the Artistic Director, to identify stakeholders, build audiences and
engagement
 To research and develop national opportunities and partners for project delivery
Production and touring skills
 Familiarity with UK venues/promoters and touring landscape
 Tour booking skills (selling work to promoters/venues)
 Knowledge of theatre practice and how venues operate
 Creating rehearsal schedules and booking rehearsal studios
 General production management and co-ordination
 Touring insurance
 Booking, buying and scheduling travel and accommodation
Technical overview
 Basic technical knowledge re: theatres and other types of venue, including festival stages, clubs
and pubs i.e. Basic knowledge of sound equipment, lighting, flooring, staging needs etc for
communicating with venues and artists, and understanding references to such technical aspects
in contracts and agreements.
 Some knowledge of film/photography including formats, software, conversions, etc. For use by
artists and participants during projects for the purpose of reviewing and learning from recorded
materials; also for capturing and recording performances.
Financial skills
 Managing budgets and Excel spreadsheets

Human resources skills
 Negotiating fees, contracts, terms and conditions etc
 Contracts
 Strong communication, networking and people skills
 Managing auditions and staff recruitment
 Manager/artist relationships, establishing and maintaining client trust
 Awareness of career development, CPD, training issues and needs
Fundraising skills
 Familiarity with public sector funding systems and schemes: Arts Council (regional and national),
British Council, Visiting Arts, local authorities, Lottery, government and international (especially
EC) sources
 Some familiarity with private sector funding landscape: corporate sponsorship, trusts and
foundations, patrons and private giving
 Networking
 Preparing and submitting funding applications and proposals
 Servicing and evaluating grants, sponsorships and awards
Marketing and publicity skills
 Familiarity with fundamentals of press, marketing and promotion
 Familiarity with basic audience research, questionnaires and analysis
Education and outreach skills
 Knowledge and experience of education, community and outreach work
 Familiarity with Government aims and objectives for children and young people
 Establishing and costing appropriate workshop, residency and masterclass events
 Booking, selling and fundraising education and outreach events and projects
 Efficient delivery, liaison and artist support in education/community work
 Familiarity with police clearance issues and basic good practice within educational or community
contexts
 Delivering feedback, evaluation and monitoring of education/community work
General







Familiarity with Health & Safety, Disability, Equal Opportunities, access and discrimination issues
Familiarity with insurance and liability issues
Knowledge of office management, office systems and communications
Time management and project monitoring skills
Experience of dealing with the public
