Position Title: Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs

Schedule:
Regular, Full time with some evenings and weekends as needed
Reports to: Vice President for Enrollment Management & Student Affairs
STATEMENT OF THE JOB:
The University of Southern Maine is seeking an individual to fill the role of Assistant Vice
President for Student Affairs. Under the direction of the Vice President for Enrollment
Management and Student Affairs the AVPSA will have oversight in the planning, developing,
implementing and advising on programs, services, activities and processes for students in their
non-academic life at the university; including student conduct and community standards,
identity-based experiences, sexual violence, Title IX, leadership development, student
governments, student organizations, disability services, health & counseling services, residence
life/housing, veteran services and other student resource center areas.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Overall management and leadership for the Dean of Students, Campus Life and Student Affairs
departments and services.
AVPSA will play a lead role in creating and maintaining a healthy campus environment through
services, programs and innovative co-curricular activities that encourage a sense of community
among students, faculty and staff.
Directly supervise the Dean of Students, Student Conduct Code Officer, Assistant Dean of
Student/Deputy Title IX Coordinator, Director of Disability Services, Directors of Student Health
and Counseling Services.
Serves as a resource to all students, both undergraduate and graduate and is available to assist
with problem solving and issues management.
Through a collaborative process, the AVPSA plans and implements strategic initiatives, develops
partnerships and collaborations, resolves issues and responds to crisis incidents.
Serves as a liaison between campus administration, student governing bodies, and student
organizations.
Partners with internal and external organizations to provide ongoing compliance training and
professional development for all professionals in student affairs.
Stewards resources and allocated funding in an impartial way to support institutional priorities.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Directly supervise the Dean of Students, Student Conduct Code Officer, Assistant Dean of
Student/Deputy Title IX Coordinator, Director of Disability Services, Directors of Student Health
and Counseling Services.
PUBLIC AND PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES RELATED TO JOB PERFORMANCE:
Serves on USM and UMS committees.
Attends professional development programs and seminars around Title IX, Student Conduct
and Community Standards, Student Health and Counseling, ADA, FERPA, Student Affairs.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Demonstrated ability to manage a complex organization at an institution of higher education,
working with a highly diverse staff and student body.
Ability to conduct strategic planning, budgeting and forecasting.
Excellent customer service experience, including ability to represent the university and its
interests in a professional and conscientious manner. Demonstrated ability to maintain high
quality/standards of work, leadership, ethics, commitment, and professional responsibility and
judgment.
Demonstrated ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality.
Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to set own priorities to
coordinate multiple assignments with fluctuating and time-sensitive deadlines.
Ability to design and oversee implementation of student and staff services and programs in an
efficient and cost-effective manner leading to continuous improvement of services.
Knowledge of national practices and philosophy of student development theory, including
learning and involvement theories, leadership theories and issues related to access, equity and
retention.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Master’s Degree in related field. Minimum of eight to ten years of
increasing/progressive experience in higher education and/or student affairs, with at
least 6 years in student conduct.

Detail-oriented, accurate, organized and efficient. Ability to work independently, handle
large volumes of work, and multi-task with interruptions.

Ability to handle information in a confidential and professional manner.

Skills in staff development/training and supervision of professional level personnel.

Budget management skills and experience

Strong oral and written communication skills; ability to communicate effectively and
professionally with a variety of different groups including students, government
agencies, vendors, and offices within the University and University of Maine System.

standard background screening) based on the responsibilities of the position: Credit history
