Significant Concepts Hindus believe in many gods and that each person experiences a series of births, deaths and rebirths in hope of being united with the Supreme Spirit. Objectives* A 1-2 B-T 4 B-C 2 B-G 2, 4, 5 C-T 1-2 C-A 1, 3, 4 D1–4 Concepts/Skills • The Hindu life is often described as a journey. • Hinduism teaches that each person passes through 16 samskaras on their journey from conception to death. • Hindus believe that after many rebirths they have the possibility to be united with the Supreme Spirit at the completion of their live on earth. • Hindus believe in many gods. • One of the most popular gods is Ganesha, who has the head of an elephant and four hands. Many of the sacred words came from Ganesha. • Every religious Hindu has a shrine in his or her home, dedicated to that family’s own personal god. • A Hindu holy man is called a sadhu. He has renounced all his possessions and family to travel around and think about the mysteries of birth. life, death and rebirth. • Hindu priests, Brahmins, conduct worship in the local mandir. • The greatest concentration of Hindus is in India. • The River Ganges is considered to be a sacred river and those who wash in it may have all bad karma removed. Significant Concepts Judaism is a religion based on the prophet Abraham and the words of the Tenakh. Significant Concepts Christians believe that there is one God, that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and the only way to salvation. He is loving and just and is the Father to all humanity. • The one God exists in 3 persons (or aspects): the Father, the Son (Jesus) and the Holy Spirit. • According to the Bible, God is the creator of the universe and all life, including people. • Jesus Christ is the Son of God, who was born of a virgin, lived completely without sin, died on a cross as a payment for the sin of all mankind and rose from the grave 3 days later. • Christians believe that belief in Jesus Christ is the only way to salvation and an eternal life in heaven. Believers can be certain of their salvation and can have a relationship with God while they live here on earth. • The Ten Commandments, the Golden Rule and other Biblical passages form the basis for how Christians should live. • Christians worship together in churches. • The Christian faith has several branches, such as Protestant and Catholic. • Formerly in Sweden, there was a government sanctioned church, but many “free churches” began to operate in Sweden years ago.
