2. JOB SUMMARY
(A brief description of the main purpose of the post)







Radiographer performing general radiography and participating in provision of 24 hour
imaging service.
To rotate to areas of the department and undertake training as appropriate to the service.
To work under the direct or indirect supervision of senior staff to achieve high standards of
diagnostic imaging in terms of quality and safety.
To support senior staff in the management of the areas as appropriate.
To contribute to ongoing service evaluation and improvement.
To demonstrate high standard of radiographic practice and accountability.
To undertake audit in line with departmental service
3. ROLE OF DEPARTMENT
(The function of the department in which the post holder works)
Diagnostic Imaging service.
To provide a full range of x-ray imaging to GP patients, outpatients, inpatients
and day cases.
24/7 Diagnostic support for trauma, ward patients, theatres
To provide a full flexible imaging service to urgent inpatients, booked patients
and emergency department patients.

Integral part of radiology team. Interacting with senior Radiographers and Students.
Working alongside Nurses, Radiologists, Clerical staff and Assistants to ensure the
smooth running of the department.

Liaising with ward and theatre staff, porters, clinicians and AE staff.

Reporting to Lead Radiographer, Principal Radiographers and Radiology Services
Manager.

Undertaking Imaging service as single handed Radiographer when required.

Working closely with Lead Radiographers in the management of general area
6. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POST
1. Administration and Clerical
a) Dealing with enquiries from patients and Trust staff regarding diagnostic imaging
procedures and patient conditions.
b) To receive patients in the department.
c) Communicate condition related information to patients and relatives, or doctors
assessing specific communication needs of individuals (e.g. trauma patients, concerns
raised over referrals for procedures)
d) To follow the Policies and Procedures relating to the administration part of Operator
Role.
e) Accurately enter essential electronic data, including information generated by others
onto Radiology Information System (CRIS) and all other electronic records pertinent to
the Radiology department in compliance with IRMER (2000), Environment Agency and
Healthcare Commission.
f) Following the Radiology Standard Operating Procedures in the organisation of
appointments and use of Radiology Information system.
g) Following the policies and procedures relating to the administration part of Operator
Role.
j) Undertaking such administration associated with ensuring all imaging sent to PACS/
worklist utilisation.
k) Transmitting images via PACS or external solutions.

2. Clinical
a) To take responsibility as an Operator/Practitioner under the IR(ME)R 2000
Regulations.
b) To perform general radiography following the Departmental Protocols.
c) To guide others in these examinations.
d) To use analytical and judgmental skills to interpret radiographs, accurately
differentiating between normal and abnormal findings, taking appropriate action as
required.
e) To rotate into specialist area for training as service need requires, working under the
supervision of a more senior member of the team.
f) To liaise with other departments and clinicians to ensure the smooth running of the
service.
g) Daily participation in the clinical training of Student Radiographers in accordance with
the regulations set out by the University of Leeds.
h) To take part in the out of hours services provided by the Department.
i) To evaluate images for technical quality and use sound judgment to utilise imaging
equipment and accessories to optimise image quality.
a) To take responsibility as an Operator/Practitioner, as appropriate, under the IR(ME)R
2000 Regulations.
b) To interpret accurately all radiology referrals, acquiring diagnostic images and
physically positioning the full range of patient presentations.
f) To keep up to date in areas of specialisation by reviewing protocols, ensuring all areas
of role are practiced and reviewed by senior staff.
i) To perform all duties with care and active participation in infection control guidelines.
j) To liaise with other departments and clinicians to ensure the smooth running of the
service.
k) To be fully aware of the Trust and Departmental Major Incident Plan.
l) Daily participation in the clinical training of Student Radiographers in according with the
regulations set out by the Leeds training body.
m) To ensure correct disposal of clinical and non-clinical waste, and to demonstrate
knowledge overtly in work areas.
o) To take part in the out of hours services provided by the Department.
3. Governance
a) Taking part in multi-disciplinary team meetings to improve service to patients.
b) To work in accordance with local and national policies:
o The Ionising Radiation Regulations 99 and 2000 (ME).
o Health and Safety Regulations
o COSHH Regulations
o Infection Control guidelines
o Fire Policy
o Major Incident Procedure
o Patient Care protocols within the department
c) To contribute to Departmental Risk Register as appropriate.
d) Ensuring policies and procedures regarding safety are followed.
e) To take part in audit under the guidance of the Clinical Manager.
f) Maintain a safe working environment for both staff and patients and recognise the need
for evaluating, reporting and acting on risk within the department.
g) Report all clinical and non-clinical incidents and near misses in the department
according to Trust policy, to ensure timely investigation.

h) Take an active part in implementing new services, to enhance and improve patient
care.
i) To ensure a high standard of cleanliness is maintained within the department and to
adhere to infection control policies.
4. Communication
a) Communicating with Radiologists, Radiographers and other disciplines regarding
examinations.
b) Communication of complex information to patients regarding their examinations.
c) Utilising advanced skills in difficult situations such as dealing with very distressed or
traumatised patients.
d) Communicating with Clinical Manager and Radiology Services Manager regarding
service issues.
5. Supervision/management/leadership
a) To deputise for seniors in their absence.
b) To assist in the induction and training of new members of staff ensuring documentation
is completed and feedback given.
c) To represent radiographers at multi-disciplinary team meetings and other meetings for
the development of service.
d) To undertake duties as delegated for the development of service/individuals.
e) To supervise students and Assistant Practitioners.
f) Develop and promote good working relationships between multidisciplinary teams.
g) When working out of hours, to prioritize patients independently and organize workload
from a wide variety of referral pathways.
6. Education and development
a) To provide evidence of updating own professional knowledge and skills sufficient to
maintain professional registration.
b) To undertake training appropriate to the post.
c) To update self on new techniques appropriate to the service.
d) To participate in the appraisal scheme in accordance with Trust policy.
7. Patient/Client/Customer focus
a) Ensuring, along with the whole team, the patient journey through the department is
timely, efficient and meeting the patients’ needs.
b) Ensuring the waiting times are kept to a minimum.
c) To ensure the safe keeping of patients’ personal effects whilst in the Department
immediately reporting any loss of these effects to the Radiology Services Manager.
8. Caring responsibilities
a) Assessment of patients prior to x-ray examination with consideration for their welfare,
dignity, safety and cultural beliefs.
b) Care of the patient during examination ensuring radiation dose is kept as low as

reasonably practical for the best possible image.
c) Care of the patient following the examination ensuring the correct communication is
made to the patient regarding results, aftercare etc.
d) Liaising with ward and medical staff regarding aftercare.
e) Making sure patients are comfortable and warm and that dignity is preserved
throughout the department.
f) Assist with the moving of patients.
g) To chaperone patients if necessary.
9. Professional
a) To adhere to professional guidelines and maintain HCPC registration.
b) To be responsible for own professional actions.
c) To promote the effective and harmonious working relationship of all
levels of staff within the service.
d) To report to duty conforming to the departmental dress code and infection control
policy.
e) To use initiative based on the training undertaken appropriate to the areas of work.
10. Technical
a) To undertake Quality Assurance testing on x-ray equipment.
b) Maintain knowledge and skills in order to operate equipment safely.
c) To have sound working knowledge of CR and DR equipment, Radiology Information
system, x ray equipment and ancillary equipment.
d) To ensure always up to date with Radiology Information Systems, ICE, Bluespier and
PACS System updates.
e) To use manual handling aids competently as required by the Trust for safety of both
patients and staff
f) To document any equipment faults or breakdowns in a timely manner and notify the
Clinical Manager.

a) To ensure effective and efficient use of all resources.

7. WORK SETTING AND REVIEW
(Who is responsible for setting and reviewing the work, the extent to which the post
holder works unsupervised, and the extent to which they are free to act without direct
reference to a more senior person)
Duties set and reviewed by the Clinical Manager.
Follows department policies and procedures.
Part of multidisciplinary team with senior staff support when required.
Works autonomously under IR(ME)R 2000 as Radiographic Operator and
Practitioner, justifying radiation exposures and checking quality of own images.
Single handed working at night with sole responsibility for service provided
8. INDIVIDUAL RESPONSIBILITIES
The post holder is expected to adhere to Trust policies and procedures and relevant
legislation including the requirements of any professional bodies and to attend
mandatory training as identified by the Trust.
Particular attention is drawn to the following requirements:
CONFIDENTIALITY
The post holder must maintain the confidentiality of information about patients, staff
and Trust business in accordance with the Data Protection Act 1998 and Caldicott
principles. You should familiarise yourself with the Trust’s confidentiality and data
protection policies.
INFECTION CONTROL
In order to comply with the Health Act 2006 (Code of Practice for the Prevention and
Control of Health Care Associated Infections) it is the responsibility of every member of
staff to prevent and control the spread of infection following the Trust’s infection control
policies. These are available on the intranet in the Infection and Prevention Control
section. If, as a routine part of your job, you do not have access to the intranet please
discuss with your line manager how you can access this information to ensure that you
are familiar with your responsibilities.
SAFEGUARDING
HDFT takes its responsibility to safeguard and protect the welfare of both adults and
children very seriously. During the annual appraisal process appraisers will use the
appropriate documents to work with post holders to identify the relevant competencies
necessary for this role and ensure the post holder is competent to undertake any
appropriate duties or requirements to safeguard adults and children.
For child safeguarding issues the relevant documents are the HDFT Child Protection
Training Strategy and the Intercollegiate Document “Safeguarding Children: the Roles
and Competencies of Health Professionals.” For adult safeguarding issues the
relevant documents are the HDFT Safeguarding Adults policy, particularly the Training
Needs Analysis.

Safeguarding also means ensuring that fundamental aspects of care, such as
appropriate nutrition, preventing falls and minimising the risk of pressure ulcer
formation, is provided for each patient in our care.
HEALTH AND SAFETY

RISK MANAGEMENT

requirements of the Trust’s Risk Management Strategy including local management
and resolution of complaints and concerns, management of Untoward Incidents / Near
Misses, and compliance with the Risk Profiling Programme.

You are responsible for ensuring that you become familiar with the requirements stated
within the Trust’s Risk Management Strategy and that you comply with the Trust’s Risk
Management Policies and Procedures.

Management will be clarified to you by your Head of Department at your local
induction.
SMOKING
Harrogate and District Foundation Trust has a Smoke Free Policy. All Health Service
