Make Your Move Kirkcaldy
Action taken
Make Your Move Kirkcaldy launched in 2011 as a partnership between Fife
Council and Sustrans to increase the number of journeys taken by bike and
on foot, as well as by public transport.
Location
Kirkcaldy, Fife
Fife Council’s Local Transport Strategy prioritises walking and cycling for
short trips.
Sustrans wants governments across the UK to make investments to
double the number of journeys under five miles made by foot, bike and
public transport to four out of five by 2020.
A Scottish Government vision of having 10% of all trips made by bike by
2020 was also taken into account.

working duties. Everything is reported to a
board of Fife Council and Sustrans.
A map showing the network of an ever expanding
network of routes for cyclists and pedestrians has
been produced. These are distributed across Kirkcaldy
in community centres, libraries and GP surgeries and
promote greater knowledge of how active travel is
possible.

of active travel, as well as public transport. The project also identified areas
where street design projects could take place with residents involved in
making improvements to their street both as somewhere to live as well as
for cycling and walking. Holding specific events was seen as a good way
to engage the public. In addition to work carried out in schools, organised
walks and bike rides are designed to encourage active travel and bike
maintenance sessions are regularly carried out.

Volunteer info
Volunteers are used to lead walks and bike rides. They also galvanise the
community into taking part and often help staff promotional stands at
community events. The volunteers receive training from Fife Council and
Sustrans.

Make Your Move
Kirkcaldy
The CycleStart programme, which sees
volunteers lead bike rides in Kirkcaldy, is a
key element of Make Your Move Kirkcaldy
and has been rolled out by Fife Council in
a number of towns. It helps people to get
out cycling and build their confidence with
rides of up to an hour at a leisurely pace.
This case study is part of a set which have been developed to help encourage active travel initiatives across the CSGN area.
They have been co-ordinated by Paths for All with financial support from Scottish Natural Heritage.
