Prevalence of trauma • Approximately 85,000 women and 12,000 men are raped in England & Wales alone every year, roughly 11 adult rapes per hour. • 1in 5 women aged 16-59 has experienced sv since the age of 16 years. Women who are 59 plus are not recorded on the British crime statistics? • 40% of women with severe mental illness had experienced rape in adulthood, of whom 53% had attempted suicide. ‘Neuroscience’ Impact of Trauma • Doris’ story A resilient Woman • Resiliency, an ability to bounce back to original form, to recover quickly, to overcome challenges, personal crises, trauma, to survive. Terror Fear Trauma TIC • Trauma informed care is our responsibility in how we respond to an individuals trauma. • TIC is an approach to the delivery of services which include an understanding of trauma and an awareness of the impact that it can have in accessing services, and in relating. • It is a strengths based service delivery approach, that is grounded in an understanding of and responsiveness to the impact of trauma. It emphasises, physical, psychological and emotional safety for both the provider and survivor. This creates healthy opportunities for healing and empowerment to rebuild a sense of control and emotional safety.
