IGRApositivewithoutsufferingfromtuberculosis,meaningtheyhavewhatiscalledlatent
tuberculosisinfection.
Islatenttuberculosisinfectiondangerous?
Apersonwithalatenttuberculosisinfectionhasanincreasedriskofdevelopingtuberculosis
duringhisorherlifetime.Approximately1in20willexperiencethis.Yourchanceof
becomingillisgreatestjustafteryouhavebeeninfected,orifyourimmunesystemisnot
verystrongbecauseofanillness(forexampleanHIVinfection)ortreatment(forexample
forcancer).Therearetreatmentsavailablefortuberculosisandthegreatmajorityrecover
completely.
CanIinfectanyoneelse?
Personswithlatenttuberculosisarenotillandcannotinfectanyoneelse.
DoIrequiretreatment?
Preventivetreatmentmayberequiredinsomecasestoavoidthedevelopmentof
tuberculosis.Thisisforyourdoctortoevaluate.Suchtreatmentisparticularlyrelevantfor
someindividuals,includingthenewlyinfected,childrenandpeoplewithaweakened
immunesystem.
IstheresomethingIneedtobeespeciallyawareof?
HavingapositiveIGRAdiagnosisdoesnotmeanthatyouneedtochangeyourlifestyleinany
way,butifyoubecomeillyoumustinformyourdoctorthatyouareIGRApositive/have
latenttuberculosistoensureyoureceivetherighttreatment.Thisappliesespeciallyifyou
developsymptomsoftuberculosis,whichare:
o
prolongedcough(morethan3weeks)
o
prolongedfever
o
nightsweats
o
weightloss
