Guidelines for S1-works at the GHL ( Department 1 and 2) Gen modified plants GMO’S For a responsible handling of genetically modified organism some policies must be followed as well as by scientists as by GHL staff. The S1 project manager at the GHL, Susanne Rühmann, is responsible to the government of Upper Bavaria for the experimental process within the GHL and therefore entitled to claim adherence as follows: General: Even if you do not work with genetically modified plants, you do need an S1 – briefing because you are researching in a greenhouse, where genetically modified plants are worked with. If you haven’t received an S1 – briefing at your professorship, you will have to get one as soon as possible. (This is also possible with Susanne Rühmann at the GHL). please keep your experiment set ups tidy. There are guided tours in this public area which are representing this facility. Please always follow the operation instructions in the houses. For space registrations provide copy of form Z (record for genetic works according to GenTAufzV). Please pay attention to operation instructions in the greenhouse area and the climate chambers, bulletins are in the areas concerned. Transgenic plants are marked with an orange label. It is prohibited to consume food within S1 areas. Pets are not allowed within S1 areas The storage of equipment is not allowed in the S1 areas. If storage space is needed, a box can be placed in the connector (please ask the gardening team). Experimental procedure: Sowing and harvesting of plants has to be done at a workplace where it is guaranteed that no seed will be mixed with remaining substrate or other experiments will be contaminated. This can be done with your own substrate at special tables placed in the cultivating house or in the S1-workroom in department 2 the remaining substrate will be sealed and marked with the experiment number plants have to be bagged in order to prevent spreading of seeds S1 – Material has to be transported in containers specified by the GHL only (even for the shortest ways !!!) No cultivating, storing or harvesting of S1 – plants in not specified rooms / areas During all works make sure, that no augmentable S1-plant material reaches the outside (seeds, roots, pollen, sprouts) in specially marked rooms working only with laboratory coats and gloves ( to be found in front of the rooms). In these rooms special sticky mats prevent spreading of seeds in the facility. tables are to be cleaned regularly (weekly) from seeds ( sweeping, hoover with S1 hoover) please place plants in a way that no seeds can fall on the ground (not too close to border) fallen off seeds are to be removed immediately (Diversion Danger) Blooming plants in greenhouse areas without netting are to be bagged before blossoms open In order to make sure that cultures are free of pathogens, scientists should pay attention to the following: In case of infection with pathogens please inform our staff immediately Approaches to fight infection have to be coordinated with our staff ( what is possible in each case) No transportation of infected plants without sealed container within the GHL No unauthorized adding of plants to existing stock prior to coordination with staff Disposal of S1 plants Under no circumstances S1 plant materiel shall be disposed with ordinary waste, it must always be autoclaved. If in the same experiments unit no S1 seed or fruit growing plants of the same genera / species are standing together with S1 plants, both have to be autoclaved (Transfer of pollen cannot be precluded. Please no fruit consumption as well !!!) S1 material can autoclaved at the GHL directly. For this please read the following instructions: o Please put plants including pots to be disposed of into the yellow bins ( deposited in each greenhouse so that plants don’t have to leave greenhouse unit !!!). The GHL staff will take care of them. o Please put the trays into the green bins ( deposited in each greenhouse so that trays don’t have to leave greenhouse unit !!! ) The GHL staff will clean them. o Regarding smaller experiment units, please coordinate disposal of plants with GHL staff. Do not act without authority and place plants outside the S1 unit. Please inform the gardening team so that plants can be autoclaved in time ! Please do not hesitate to contact GHL staff for any questions. I received an S1 briefing. I read and understood the guidelines and will contact GHL expert staff for any questions or comments.
