The trailer of
“An inconvenient truth”
By Davis Guggenheim
Biographical Note
Davis Guggenheim (born 1964) is an American director and producer of documentary and
dramatic film and television. An Inconvenient Truth is based on a slideshow in which Al Gore
argues that humans are responsible for climate change and that its effects on our planet could be deva
stating. He presents scientific data and makes shocking predictions about what could
happen if greenhouse gas emissions are not reduced. During his presidential campaign in
2000, while he was running against Bush to become US president, he promised that he would
ratify the Kyoto Protocol if he became president. An Inconvenient Truth was awarded by the
Academy Award for best Documentary Feature in 2007.

Today when we think about the greenhouse effect, we also think of
global warming.
Global warming is the rise of average temperatures in the
Earth.
Over the last 100 years this has slowly increased.
Some experts have predicted that by before the end of the twenty-first
century the Earth’s average temperature could rise from 1.4 to 5.8 °C.
This could cause such problems as very high or very low temperatures
Greenhouse gases, such as water vapour, carbon dioxide and
methane, surround the Earth’s surface and part of the
atmosphere. These exist naturally and have to keep the Earth
warm. Whithout these the Earth’s temperature would be, in
some areas and regions at risk, about -18 °C!
This is called the greenhouse effect and it allows us to live on
our planet, but if greenhouse gases increase into the
atmosphere, the Earth’s temperature will rise up and the
climate will change with worst effect on people’s lives
BRAINSTORMING
What do you know about the following?

Melissa Etheridge and “I need to wake up”
Activity 2
Now listen to the song by Melissa Etheridge, read the lyrics
and then talk about it’s meaning
(20 minutes)
Then write the song’s key concepts (10 minutes)
“I NEED TO WAKE UP" BY MELISSA ETHERIDGE
Have I been sleeping?
I’ve been so still, afraid of crumbling
Have I been careless?
Dismissing all the distant rumblings
Take me where I am supposed to be
To comprehend the things that I can’t see
'Cause I need to move, I need to wake up
I need to change, I need to shake up
I need to speak out, somethings got to break up
I've been asleep and I need to wake up now
And as a child I danced like it was 1999
And my dreams were wild
The promise of this new world would be mine
Now I am throwing off the carelessness of youth
To listen to an inconvenient truth
That I need to move, I need to wake up
I need to change, I need to shake up
I need to speak out, somethings got to break up
I've been asleep and I need to wake up now
I am not an island
I am not alone
I am my intentions
Trapped here in this flesh and bone
And I need to move, I need to wake up
I need to change, I need to shake up
I need to speak out, somethings got to break up
I've been asleep and I need to wake up now
I want to change, I need to shake up
I need to speak out, oh, somethings got to break up
I’ve been asleep and I need to wake up now

• The Greenland Ice Sheet has experienced record
melting in recent years; if the entire 2.8 million cu km
sheet were to melt, it would raise sea levels by 6m.

What are the greenhouse gases?
What are the names of natural greenhouse gases?
Why is the greenhouse effect important?
Which everyday products used CFCs in the past?

Expansion
Have you ever heard of
the ozone layer?
The ozone layer is a layer of gas which surrounds the Earth. It
is essential because it stops many of the sun’s dangerous ultraviolet rays (UV rays) from getting to the Earth. In the early
1980s scientists discovered that the ozone layer is slowly
disappearing at around 4% every ten years.
Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), used in air-conditioning systems,
refrigerators and aerosol cans, are the main cause of this, as a
result more people today are trying to reduce their use of
CFCs.
Have you ever heard of rising seas?
The rise of temperature in the polar zones is melting some of the ice
and causing the problem of rising seas.
It could cause the coasts of some countries to go underwater.

Curiosity flash
In August 2007 a week- long campaign called Camp for Climate Action
took place at London’s Heathrow Airport to protest against the new
building of a new terminal and runway, which could lead to an increase
in the number of flights from 480,000 to 800,000 a year. Every year,
the planes flying to and from Heathrow produce as much greenhouse
gas as 5 million cars.

Answer these questions
1. What is global warming?
2. What are some of the causes of global warming?
3. What are the names of three natural greenhouse
gases?
4. Why is the greenhouse effect important?
5. What does the ozone layer do?
6. What are the consequences of higher
temperatures in the polar zones?
What gets us into trouble is
not what we don’t know,
it’s what we know for sure
that just ain’t so. (Mark
Twain)
