Directions: perform the following experiments. At the conclusion of the activities, complete the questions
at the bottom of the page.
Experiment #1
Mix 1 tsp. baking soda with 2 tsp vinegar in a flask with a broad bottom and a narrow top. Shake well.
Place a balloon over the flask. Watch it fill with CO2. Strike a match or light a candle and slowly remove
the balloon from the flask. Show that the gas liberated is CO2 because it is a heavy gas that extinguishes
fires.
Experiment #2
Mix 2 Tbsp. salt and 1/2 c. water. Heat the solution until all the water evaporates. Show the salt
crystalize on the bottom of the pan after the water is evaporated.
Experiment #3
Prepare a small package of Jello according to the package except add the cold water first. Observe what
happens to the mixture. Set the Jello aside in the refrigerator until the next class period and observe
again what has happened to the mixture.
