Athens vs. Sparta Postcard Assignment
Directions: You will synthesize, summarize, and visualize the information
learned in this lesson about the differences between the city-states of
Athens and Sparta into a postcard. Use your notebook paper to create a
rough draft before creating your postcard on an index card. This will be
your ticket to earn an index card.
Back side of postcard (lined side):
● Write to your family as if you have “time traveled” and have been able
to visit EITHER the city-state of Athens OR the city-state of Sparta
(choose one, not both!)
● Your note should sound conversational—similar to how a real postcard
note might sound
● Set up your note correctly: Dear __________, Sincerely/Love,
____________
● The note itself should describe details about at least 3 of the
aspects we studied in class (choose at least 3 from the list below)

○ women & slaves
Front side of postcard (blank side):
● Should have some sort of title such as “Greetings From Athens” or
“Greetings From Sparta”
● Should have a detailed illustration depicting a scene from the citystate you have visited (ex. you could visualize what an Athenian agora
looks like or a scene of young Spartans in military training)
● The illustration should NOT include any stick figures
● The front of the card should be neat, colorful, and include no white
space
