2016 Golisano Health Leadership Award Recipient
Dr. Stephen Sulkes, Co-Director of the Strong Center for Developmental Disabilities
Dr. Stephen Sulkes has been an active Clinical Director in Special Olympics’ Healthy
Athletes® program since 2010 and he is one of the most dedicated and passionate Clinical
Directors statewide. Starting in 2012, Dr. Sulkes became a lead advisor on the Special
Olympics New York Healthy Communities Project and has provided expert guidance and
tireless energy to promoting follow-up care and wellness programming for athletes. Dr.
Sulkes founded the Team Trainer program, which pairs medical/dental residents with a
Special Olympics team, developing connections between athletes and the next generation
of healthcare professionals and helping athletes to set and achieve wellness goals.
Dr. Sulkes is the Co-Director of the Strong Center for Developmental Disabilities, Director of
Rochester’s LEND (Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities)
Program, and is a national leader among peers. Dr. Sulkes is also the President-elect for
AADMD and has been one of the lead advocates nationally on a project to have people with
intellectual disabilities recognized as a medically underserved population.

Our Mission
To provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-style sports for
all children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop
physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy, and participate in a sharing of skills and
friendship with their families, Special Olympics athletes and the community. Through their
participation in Special Olympics New York athletes gain confidence and build a positive self-image,
which carries into the classroom, the home, the workplace and the community.

Today, we serve 67,162 (2015 census) athletes, making Special Olympics New York the largest program in the United
States and the sixth largest program in the world. Special Olympics New York has its headquarters in Schenectady, with
offices in the Long Island, New York City, Hudson Valley, Central, Western, Capital and Genesee regions.
