SPEEDMINTON STUDY GUIDE
The Game
Speedminton is a racquet game that can be played virtually anywhere. The game
does not have a net similar to most racquet sports. It is very popular in Europe and
is gaining a strong following in the USA. It is also called Speed Badminton.
Equipment
The equipment needed is very minimal. Each player needs a Speedminton racquet
(which look very similar to a racquetball racquet), a Speeder (similar to a small
badminton birdie) and court markers. Each court is a square space marked at each
corner.
The Court
A regulation court is two squares that are 5.5 meters on each side. The boxes are
separated by a space that is 12.8 meters long.
Scoring
There is a point awarded on every play (unless is must be replayed). Points are
awarded for the following—
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
Speeder strikes an opponent
Speeder strikes the ground in the opponents court
Opponent strikes a shot that lands out of bounds
Opponents strike the speeder more than one time
Opponent commits a Service Fault
Beginning of Play
To start play, a serving player/team must be determined. The server then gets three
serves. After that, the opponent then gets three serves. This order continues
throughout the entire game.
The serve must be struck from within a players’ own court. A legal serve has the
Speeder dropped from waist level and struck with the racquet in an underhand
motion. The head of the racquet must be below the hand.
From that point, each player will attempt to volley the Speeder in an attempt to gain
a point.
Winning the game
The game is played until a player/team has 15 points. Each game must be won by a
two point margin. If a game is tied 15:15, service alternates after each point until a
winner is determined.
