Welcome to the study!
We are interested in the relationships among many different things. You will asked to
play a game and to complete some questionnaires about yourself.
Participants in this study also have the opportunity to win a raffle with a bonus payment
of $50. Raffle tickets will be awarded based on your choices during some of the survey
activities. The more raffle tickets you have at the end of the survey, the better your
chances of winning the raffle and getting the $50 bonus payment.
You may also be invited to complete a follow-up study for an additional payment.

This next activity involves tickets to win the raffle for $50. Remember, the more tickets
you have at the end of the survey, the better your chances to win the raffle.
Remember that the tickets have value: The more of them you accumulate, the better
your chances of winning the bonus. Likewise, the more tickets other survey takers
accumulate, the better for them.
You will be randomly assigned to the role of Player 1 or Player 2 for the duration of the
activity. The activity consists of 30 rounds of a game.
Each round, Player 1 will be given 100 raffle tickets.
Player 1 may choose to give away some or all of these tickets to Player 2. The tickets
given to Player 2 will be tripled. So, for example, if Player 1 gives 50 tickets to Player 2,
Player 2 will actually receive 150 tickets.
Then, Player 2 may choose to return to Player 1 as many of the tripled tickets as they
would like. In the example above, if Player 2 returned 50 of the tripled tickets, both
players would have 100 tickets.
Whether you are Player 1 or Player 2 will stay the same throughout the game, but
you will be paired with different, randomly assigned, people in each round.
On 15 rounds, you will get to be Controller. On these rounds, you will be given the
opportunity to punish the other player. If you feel they played unfairly, you will be able to
make them lose one third of the tickets they kept.
On 15 other rounds, the other player will get to be Controller. If they feel you played
unfairly, they will get to make you lose one third of the tickets you kept that round.
When the instructions are clear, press the continue button to begin the game.
In this next task, you will be asked to judge how related different concepts are. An
example item is below. You will be given a word or phrase and be asked to judge how
strongly it is related to other concepts.
In the picture below, the word is "canine."
Strongly related concepts are those that always or really easily come to mind
when you think about a word. For example, when thinking about the word "canine,"
"dog" is a strongly related concept, so "dog" should get a high rating on the scale.
Unrelated concepts are those that never or only with great difficulty come to mind
when thinking about a word. For example, when thinking about the word "canine,"
"ceiling" is an unrelated concept, so "ceiling" should get a low rating.
The other two words, "bark" and "legs" are somewhat related to canines, so they should
get ratings in the middle of the scale.
Remember that “relatedness” is not about whether the words mean the same thing.
Instead, it is simply about how easily or quickly one word brings the other to mind.

Think about yourself having power. Imagine what it is like for you to have control and
influence over others. Now that you have this concept in mind, how quickly or easily

On the next page, we will ask you to complete a visualization exercise. You will be asked
to recall a specific event and to visualize it for 60 seconds. After 60 seconds, the survey
will automatically advance, and you will be asked to write about what you visualized.
Please recall a particular incident in which you had power over another individual or
individuals. By power, we mean a situation in which you controlled the ability of another
person or persons to get something they wanted, or were in a position to evaluate those
individuals.
Sit back, relax, and try to get a visual image in mind of the incident you have chosen.
Focus your attention on this incident. Picture the faces of the other people involved.
Really try to experience the incident. Just try to get a good image of it. You may find that
you can see the color of the eyes or hair of the person over whom you had power or
maybe hear their voice. Imagine this person is here with you. Now once you have an
image of the person, try to zoom in and get a close-up, focused impression. Hold this
image for a little while. Imagine talking with the person. Try to feel them there with you.

This next activity involves tickets to win the raffle for $50. Remember, the more tickets
you have at the end of the survey, the better your chances to win the raffle.
For this activity, you will again be randomly paired with one other survey-taker,
whom we will refer to simply as the “other.” Other is someone you do not know and that
you will not meet in the future.
You will be given 1000 raffle tickets.
You may choose to give away some or all of these tickets to Other. The tickets you give
to Other will be tripled. So, for example, if you give Other 500 of your tickets, Other will
actually receive 1500 tickets.
Then, Other may choose to return to you as many of the tripled tickets as they
would like.
The decision by both players will be final once they are made.
Also, remember that the tickets have value: The more of them you accumulate, the
better your chances of winning the bonus. Likewise, from the Other’s point of view, the
more points s/he accumulates, the better for him/her.
You will find out at the end of the survey how many tickets Other returns to you.
When the instructions are clear, press the Continue button to move on.

Raffle Information
During the survey, you were told that you were paired with another participant to
accumulate tickets for a raffle for a $50 bonus payment. You were not actually paired
with anyone, and your choices will not affect your chances of winning the raffle. When
the survey is concluded, all participants will be entered into the raffle with equal chances
of winning.
