Lesson 4: Graphing Linear Equations in Standard Form
Objectives: SWBAT graph horizontal and vertical lines
SWBAT graph linear equations in standard form using intercepts
SWBAT use linear equations in standard form to solve real-world problems
Standard Form of a Linear Equation—𝐴π‘₯ + 𝐡𝑦 = 𝐢 where A, B, and C are real numbers and A
and B are not both zero
Example 1: Graph each line.
a) π‘₯ = βˆ’3.5
b) 𝑦 = 4.5
Example 2: Graph each equation
a) 5π‘₯ βˆ’ 10𝑦 = 20
b) 2π‘₯ + 8𝑦 = 16
Example 3: You are going to the fair and have $16 to spend on rides and games. Ride tickets
cost $4 and game tickets cost $2. The equation 4π‘₯ + 2𝑦 = 16 models the situation, where x is
the number of ride tickets you buy and y is the number of game tickets you buy. Graph the
equation. Interpret the intercepts. Find four possible solutions in the context of the problem.
