Problem 6.1.3: Building a Case
Introduction
Throughout the course, you have studied how human body systems work together to maintain health and
wellness. Unfortunately, no matter how hard they try, your body systems cannot protect you from all injury
and illness. And when disease or injury plagues one system, the others will feel the effects. In the Human
Body Systems course, you have built healthy tissue and organs on your Maniken®. Sadly, the time has
come for your beloved Maniken® to get sick.
This year you have met some amazing patients and have helped to diagnose and explain illnesses that
affect many of the human body systems. In this activity, you will explore a disease from beginning to end
by creating a patient case study. You will “give your Maniken® a disease” and show how this illness or
injury presents in the body and affects other body systems. As a prelude to the next course, Medical
Interventions, you will also investigate and model medical interventions on your Maniken®. What are the
options for treating or curing this disease, illness or injury? You will work with your team to create a
comprehensive case file for your patient and to present your case to your fellow biomedical professionals.
Procedure
1. Work with your Maniken partner to research an interesting medical condition. This disease, injury, or
disorder should show the impact one illness may have on multiple human body systems and body
functions. Some aspect(s) of this disease or disorder and a type of treatment for this disorder should be
able to be modeled on your Maniken®. In this activity, your model is your patient.
2. With your partner, complete these two tasks:
o Compile a case file for your fictional patient. You will make his or her story come alive on
your Maniken®. Trace the history of your time with this patient from beginning to end and
show evidence of how you investigated symptoms, diagnosed the problem (it may have
taken you a few tries), consulted with other biomedical professionals and developed
treatment plans.
o Design a presentation for your colleagues that outlines the path you took to diagnose the
patient, describes the relevant details about this illness, and illustrates cutting edge
treatment options.
3. In either the case file or the presentation, include or address the following. How you do so is up to you.
Be creative. You are stating the problem and you are responsible for finding a solution. Work with your
team to design and solve a problem that showcases what you have learned this year.

An introduction that describes the initial presentation of the disease. You can keep this introduction
formal or you can provide a narrative of what you observed and what you were told by the patient.
Make it interesting and set up the medical mystery.

A description of diagnostic tests that were run as well as mock data for the results. If you are running
blood or chemical tests, include results and discuss normal and abnormal values. If you are taking
diagnostic images of some sort, find example images that show the results.

A description of the findings that shows how and why the disease is affecting many different body
systems and functions. Include information about the cause of the disease. Is this disorder the result of
an injury, an infectious disease, environmental factors, genetic factors, a combination of factors or is
the cause still unknown?


A visual depiction of this disease on the Maniken®. You may add in new organs or structures or you can
modify structures you have built over the course of the year. You can use any additional visuals,
models, video clips, or animations that you feel are relevant to the case.

A demonstration and discussion of at least one medical intervention that will be used in this case. Show
this intervention on the Maniken® or with additional visuals. Be sure to model the desired result.

Information about the role of at least three biomedical sciences professionals in the case. Weave this
information in as you see appropriate and in whatever format you would like.

Suggestions or ideas for new treatment options. You will receive bonus points if you can show your
cutting edge treatment ideas on your Maniken®.
4. Use your patient case file for your presentation. Order items in the file and presentation in a way that
shows how a doctor worked through this case. Let the mystery unfold with each new piece of evidence.
5. Note that the case file may include patient health history information and interviews, diagnostic images,
notes from different biomedical professionals, test results, notes about how you came to conclusions
about the health of your patient, treatment or rehabilitation plans, or anything else that is relevant to the
case. Be thorough and really think about all that goes into making a full diagnosis and treatment plan.
Think big here and be creative.
6. Design a presentation that lasts no longer than 12 minutes. Use presentation software to create the
framework for your presentation, but refer to visuals and your Maniken® to make it dynamic.
7. Share your presentation with the class. Be prepared to answer questions.
