Courier Program Internship The sites below are primary healthcare sites for the internship and each Courier will also choose at least one community service site to volunteer with weekly during the internship as well. In other words, not all of a Courier's time will be spent at these healthcare sites. The daily schedule for all Couriers will be set by program staff for the first two weeks of the program. After that, with help from Courier program staff, Couriers are expected to take ownership of scheduling based on personal interests, organizational / community needs and activities. 2016 Healthcare Site Descriptions ARH Mary Breckinridge System - including Mary Breckinridge Hospital, Big Creek Clinic and Beechfork Clinic (2 Couriers) Location: Hyden, KY and surrounding communities Description: Mary Breckinridge Hospital is a small, rural hospital with a home health agency right next door. Clinics are located within 25 from the hospital in more remote areas. Technology access is limited. Provide a range of non-emergency services consistent with rural health clinic. Client populations served: Serve age 2 to 95. Mostly Caucasian, little diversity. 80-85% Medicaid and Medicare. 10% commercial insurance, 10% self pay. Courier Activities: Couriers assigned here will split time between a rural health clinic, shadowing all departments at the hospital and going on visits with the home health agency. Courier will assist with medical records, a senior outreach program and other administrative tasks. Shadowing Opportunities: Nurse practitioners, Physical therapists, Occupational therapists, home health nurses and doctors. This site best for someone who is interested in exposure to the work of a small, rural hospital and the home of Frontier Nursing Service. Also it is ideal for someone who would prefer living close to peers. Living Arrangement: This Courier will be live at FNU Wendover campus with other Couriers. Kentucky Mountain Health Alliance Little Flower Clinic (1 Courier) Location: Hazard, Kentucky 41701 Description: Site is Healthcare for the Homeless Program, serving primarily rural homeless patients from Perry and Harlan counties. Clinic collaborates with a range of providers and organizations to provide near comprehensive healthcare services for its clients. Contains medical clinic, mental health program, social work / home health coordination and dental clinic. Client populations served: All ages except pediatric, primarily white and uninsured. Courier Activities: Couriers assigned here will shadow a range of providers at various points along the care spectrum, including work with entry point collaborating homeless shelters. The Courier will have an opportunity to focus on primary care and patient case management both in the clinic and home health settings. Courier will perform administrative tasks, input medications assistance forms, assist with outdoor garden project and do other general office duties as assigned. Courier may work closely with Americorps volunteer(s) on site. Shadowing Opportunities: Nurse practitioners, physicians, dentists and case workers. Courier will also have the opportunity to develop an independent project based on patient needs. This site best for someone who is interested in social work / case management, primary care and / or the business development side of health care clinics. Also it is ideal for someone who would prefer living close to peers. Living Arrangement: This Courier will be live at FNU Wendover campus with other Couriers. Red Bird Mission (1-2 Couriers) Red Bird has a Christ-centered mission. While they do not require their volunteers to be Christian, they do expect them to be accepting of what they are doing there. For example, they open their summer camp days with kids with a prayer, etc. Courier must be comfortable serving in such an environment. Location: Beverly, KY and surrounding communities, primarily residing in Bell, Clay and Leslie Counties. Description: Red Bird Mission is a non-profit organization supported primarily by the United Methodist Church that provides educational, health, and community outreach ministries to low- income individuals. Red Bird Mission’s ministries include: a K-12 school, a health clinic, a dental clinic, community store, senior citizen center, emergency food pantry, transportation assistance, prescription assistance, home nursing visits, adult education, gardening/farmer’s market program, after school and summer youth programs, and meal delivery, among other things. (www.rbmission.org) Client Populations Served: all ages, mostly Caucasian and Appalachian Courier Activities: The Courier would have the opportunity to serve in a variety of ways through Red Bird Mission’s community outreach programs. Almost all programs listed in the above description would be open for a courier to be involved in, but Red Bird Mission is particularly interested in someone who would help with their summer youth and Community Health programs. There is also an opportunity to assist with Grow Appalachia, a food security program. Shadowing Opportunities: Home visits with nursing staff, nurse practitioner at the health clinic. This site best for someone whose focus is not solely health care, but is also interested in a variety of community outreach programs for the underserved. Living Arrangement: On the campus of Red Bird Mission is housing that is for mission volunteers and those involved in work camps. This living arrangement would suit someone who will take the initiative to meet people and be involved in the community, but who is also comfortable with a remote location. *One Courier will lead the summer youth program and will be working 2 days per week at the Red Bird Clinic, operated by Manchester Memorial Hospital, located on the Red Bird Mission campus. This provides the opportunity to shadow nursing staff and advanced registered nurse practitioners in a primary health care clinic setting. The other will be working 3 days per week at Manchester Memorial Hospital in Manchester Ky, while serving on the Red Bird Mission campus 2 days per week working with the Community Health Nurse and Community Outreach programs (this is the same campus the lodging is located). . *Manchester Memorial Hospital (MMH) (1 Courier) Location: Manchester, KY and surrounding communities Description: Manchester Memorial Hospital is at the center of a health care campus in Manchester, KY in Clay County, which is adjacent to Leslie County. In addition to the hospital services on campus there are numerous clinics and offices that focus on a variety of services including pediatric care, women’s care, cardiology, primary care, home health, and physical therapy. Client Populations Served: Although MMH offers a variety of services, it deals primarily with an aging population with a majority using government insurance. Courier Activities: participation in health fair, help nurses and nurse manager with paperwork, patient assistance with form completion, alcohol and tobacco patient education Shadowing Opportunities: physicians, nurse practitioners, home health aides, physical therapy, general surgery. This site best for someone who would like to experience a range of health care services provided to a rural population. Living Arrangement: On the campus of Red Bird Mission is housing that is for mission volunteers and those involved in work camps. This living arrangement would suit someone who will take the initiative to meet people and be involved in the community, but who is also comfortable with a remote location. * This Courier will also be working 2 days per week at Red Bird Mission shadowing the Community Health Nurse for home visits, in-services and health fair coordination.
