UKZN/CSIR HONOURS, MASTERS & DOCTORAL RESEARCH SCHOLARSHIPS
COLLEGE OF AGRICULTURE, ENGINEERING AND SCIENCE
The College of Agriculture, Engineering and Science has teamed up with CSIR to offer five prestigious
postgraduate scholarships to South African students, studying full time toward an Honours, Masters or
Doctoral degree in the listed areas of research within the College. There are two Hours Scholarships at
R30 000 each and in addition to the University’s fee remission (for first year Masters and three years of
PhD), two scholarships at R80 000 for Masters and one at R110 000 for PhD available to high caliber
students for the year 2016. The tenure of the scholarships shall be one year for Honours, two years for
Masters and three years for PhD. Preference will be given to projects that have collaborative research or
co-supervision with CSIR scientist.

Information and communications technology with the focus on (i) Centre for Artificial Intelligence,
(ii) ICT4EO (Earth Observation), and (iii) Wireless Networks;

Lasers with the focus on (i) Application of laser and spectroscopy, (ii) Sensors Science and
Technology, (iii) Quantum Optics, (iv) LINDAR, and (v) Selective Solar Absorbers;

Health with the focus on (i) Traditional Medicines and Indigenous Knowledge, (ii) Algal research,
(iii) Enzyme Technology with Specific focuses on the Sugar Industry, (iv) Collaboration in
expression systems, (v) Agricultural Science and Food security, (vi) Bioassays for infectious
Diseases, (vii) In- Vivo Animal Testing, and (viii) Therapeutic protein production;

The Natural Environment with the focus on (i) Coastal and marine Research, (ii) Remote
Sensing, (iii) Environmental Management Research, (iv) Forestry and Forest Products Centre
(including Cellulose Ultrastructure), (v) Climate Change, (vi) Air Quality, Water Quality and
Pollution, (vii) Bioenergy/ Renewable Energy, (viii) Urban Environmental Management and
Planning, (ix) Land-use planning, (x) Environmental System Decisions, (xii) Environmental
Science and (xiii) Environmental Technologies;

Modelling and Digital Science with the focus on (i) Mechatronics and Robotics (ii) Biometrics, (iii)
Information Security (Cryptography, Network Security), and (iv) Artificial Intelligence.
