SYLLABUS
Mission: To prepare students to compete successfully and contribute responsibly in a global society
Course Objective: The study of world history in Grade 8 addresses the time period from prehistoric man to the 1500s.
Content standards for this grade incorporate the strands of economics, geography, history, and political science, with
an emphasis on the history and geography strands. Course content focuses on the migrations of early peoples, the rise
of civilizations, the establishment of governments and religions, the growth of economic systems, and ways in which
these events shaped Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas.
Grading Standards: Grades will be weighted as follows, as per system policy: Summative assessments (tests, major projects)
60%, classwork and homework 40%. If a student misses an assignment or test, a grade of “1” will be placed in the
gradebook as a placeholder until the work is completed. If an assignment is incomplete due to an absence, the partial
grade will stand until the work is completed. Study Guide homework is assigned one week before it is due. Because
of the time given, 5 points will be deducted if homework is turned in late.
Course Pace: A detailed pacing guide can be found on the Huntsville City Schools website, but the following is a basic
statement of what is to be covered each nine weeks:
1st nine weeks: Early archeological findings and prehistoric people; the development of early civilizations in
Mesopotamia and Egypt, and the development of early Judaism
2nd nine weeks: The development of early Buddhism and Hinduism; the development of civilizations in Greece,
Persia, China and India.
3rd nine weeks: The development of early Christianity and Islam; the development of the Roman and Byzantine
Empires; the development of the early Russian state; the development of early Islamic civilizations
4th nine weeks: The development of African civilizations; the development of pre-Columbian cultures in the
Americas; the military, cultural, economic and governmental events that shaped Europe in the Middle Ages
