Financial Literacy in City Schools
Financial literacy education is critical for ensuring that our students graduate with the skills necessary to
navigate in today’s complex global economy. It is incumbent upon public school systems to make certain that
the next generation of American citizens is prepared to deal with the financial realities of our society. Baltimore
City Public Schools (City Schools) is committed to ensuring that all students receive instruction in financial
literacy that will prepare them to be responsible citizens.
The personal financial literacy education program of instruction in City Schools meets the requirements set forth
in COMAR. The personal financial literacy education program of study in City Schools:

Provides an instructional program for the diversity of student needs, abilities, and interests at the early,
middle, and high school learning years.

Is primarily taught in social studies courses in 3rd and 7th grade, and in the American Government high school
course. In addition, components of personal finance can be found in all social studies courses where
applicable.
