Egyptian Newspaper Project
Projects Due Wednesday, 3/4
As we complete our unit of study on ancient Egypt, it is time for you to
demonstrate your knowledge about this ancient civilization!
With a group of 4-5 students, you will be creating an Egyptian Newspaper.
The goal is for the group to capture life in ancient Egypt during one of three
kingdoms: Old, Middle, or New Kingdoms. Your group will need to create a
catchy title for the Newspaper, an appropriate date, and various other
components to make this newspaper seem like a real paper that may have
existed in these ancient days. (With English writing of course!)
The newspaper is a group effort and therefore will be 50% of your
grade for this project.
In addition, each member of the group will create an article to contribute to
the newspaper. This article must be typed.
This part of the project is individually completed and will be the other
50% of your grade for this project.
The article will creatively demonstrate your understanding of one of the
five aspects of ancient Egyptian life listed below:
1.
Religion
– The article must reflect your understanding of the connection
between the gods, nature, and/or morality. (Examples: Mummification of a
Pharaoh, Editorial of whether a Pharaoh will make it to the afterlife - Weighing of the
Heart Ceremony, Akhenaton’s change in religion and the public’s opinion)
2. Economy – The article must reflect your understanding of the how the
ancient Egyptians used their natural resources to make them a wealthy civilization.
(Examples:
Hiring of a new Scribe, Trade at Cataract Ports, Papyrus picking and
development of products, expanding trade routes)
3. Government – The article should reflect your understanding of the how
ancient Egyptian pharaohs and queens led to the strength and unity of the
civilization. (Examples: Pharaoh’s accomplishments or events involving the
pharaoh, A new member of the dynasty taking reign, Vizier fired for misguiding the
Pharaoh)
4. Technology
– The article should reflect your understanding of the
development of technology in ancient Egypt and how it impacted the Egyptians.
(Examples: Problems with an irrigation System, development of the Valley of the
Kings, New Weapons/tools, Mummification advancements)
5.
Geography
– The article must reflect your understanding of how the
geographical features of ancient Egypt impact everyday life. (Examples: Weather
related problems (Sandstorms/Droughts), Importance of the Nile in trade, Papyrus
growing, Rock cutting in Nubia, Flooding problems in the Nile Delta.)
Ideas on what perspective to take on your articles:
· A reporter’s detailed description of an event that would be realistic during ancient Egyptian
times.
· An editorial, which is an article from the editor’s point of view on an event or person during that
time period.
· A letter to the editor, which is a letter to the Newspaper from an ordinary citizen of ancient
Egypt stating his or her view about an event or person during that time period.
Below are the steps you and your group will take to complete this project on time.
Dates have been included to ensure you manage your time wisely.
