Stop Kiss is presented by special arrangement with
Dramatists Play Service, Inc., New York.
Original New York Production by The New York Shakespeare Festival,
George C. Wolfe, Producer.
This play was written with support from Playwrights Horizons made possible in part by
funds granted to the author through a program sponsored by Amblin Entertainment, Inc.
FROM THE DIRECTOR
In the play, Sara is always asking Callie, "What do you want?" Callie answers
her question with a kiss, which is a satisfactory answer for Sara, but
unaccepted by the society in which they live. In an artistic sense, I seek
to answer this question for myself and for every marginalized woman:
queer women, women of color, trans women, battered women, gender
non-conforming women, and women who are too wonderful to fall into any
of the categories aforementioned. Try as I may, I know my answer will fall
short: for me to try to answer such a question is overwhelming because the
oppression of the patriarchy is overwhelming, thus making the question of
"What do you want?" difficult to answer for myself, much more for all the
voices I hope are some day heard.
Art of this kind is revolutionary and invites us to not only reflect on being
part the "problem" but to refract, examining the world as a whole through
our beautifully broken lenses. While directing Stop Kiss has answered many
of the questions that I had before starting the process, it has left me with
even more questions since its beginning. Asking these questions about
the patriarchy, about systemic oppression, about intolerance requires an
immeasurable amount of courage. My hope is that this show emboldens
us to be courageous and ask these difficult questions as we move forward.
Love and light,
Liz

LAB THEATRE
An adult acting class is the setting for
this award-winning comedy about
four strangers whose interaction over
six-weeks of theatre games leads to
real-life drama. Cleverly utilizing actual
acting exercises for each scene, Pulitzer
Prize-winner Annie Baker examines the
depths of emotion inherent in human
relationships, and hilariously shows the
truly transformative power of theatre.
“Circle is about real people exploring
