 Many dancers and choreographers use music to influence dance styles
 Rhythm, being one of the main components of music, will influence
different dance styles
 In this unit, we will explore how music influences different dance styles
Ballet
 Ballet often, not always, uses classical music
 Many ballet productions use classical music. For example, Tchaikovsky’s
Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies from the Nutcracker.

Cha-cha
 Cuban origin
 It is danced to cha-cha music introduced by Cuban composer and violinist
Enrique Jorrin in the early 1950s.

 The Charleston is a dance named for the harbor city of Charleston, South

Samba
 Samba is a lively, rhythmical dance of Brazilian origin
 2/4 time
 Samba is a dance authentic to African people in Brazil who brought much
of their music and dance culture into Latin America with, them upon arrival.
 It has also been influenced by many other Latin American music genres
and dances.
 The Samba music rhythm has been danced in Brazil since its inception in
the late 16th century.

Tango
 a partner dance that originated in the 1880s along the River Plate, the natural
border between Argentina and Uruguay, and soon spread to the rest of the
world
 Tango is a dance that has influences from African and European cultures.
 Dances from the ceremonies of former slave peoples helped shape the
modern day Tango.
 The dance originated in lower-class districts of Buenos Aires and Montevideo.
 The word "tango" and "tambo" around the river plate basin were initially used to
refer to musical gatherings of slaves, with written records of colonial authorities
attempting to ban such gatherings as early as 1789

Tap Dance
 Tap dance is a form of dance characterized by using the sounds of tap
shoes striking the floor as a form of percussion.
 Two major variations on tap dance: rhythm (jazz) tap and Broadway tap.
 Broadway tap focuses on dance; it is widely performed in musical theater.
 Rhythm tap focuses on musicality, part of the jazz tradition.
 The sound is made by shoes that have a metal "tap" on the heel and toe.

Irish/Celtic Step Dance
 is a style of performance dance with its roots in traditional Irish dance.
 It is generally characterized by a stiff upper body and quick and precise
movements of the feet.
 It can be performed solo or by groups.
 Uses Irish/Celtic music – fiddles, percussion, etc.
 Irish stepdance is performed in most places with large Irish populations,
though many stepdancers are not of Irish ancestry.
 Riverdance, an Irish stepdancing interval act in the 1994 Eurovision Song
Contest that later became a hugely successful theatrical production,
greatly contributed to its popularity.

Hip Hop
 Street dance styles primarily performed to hip-hop music or that have
evolved as part of hip-hop culture.
 It includes a wide range of styles primarily breaking, locking, and popping
which were created in the 1970s and made popular by dance crews in the
United States.
 Hip-hop dance is practiced in both dance studios and outdoor spaces.

Modern Dance
 is a broad genre of western concert or theatrical dance
 primarily from Germany and the United States in the late 19th and early
20th centuries.
 Began as a rejection of, or rebellion against classical ballet.

Jazz Dance
 is shared by a large range of dance styles.
 Jazz dance was an integral part of jazz music until the end of the swing era
in the late 1940s.
 In the 1950s, a new genre of jazz dance — modern jazz dance —
emerged, with roots in Caribbean traditional dance.
 Every individual style of jazz dance has roots traceable to one of these two
distinct origins. Jazz was a big hit in the early 1950s and it is still a well-loved
style of dance all over the world.
