JULES STEIN EYE INSTITUTE, UCLA
Ensuring future advances in vision science
“The deepest gratitude will never be expressed.
It will be found in the eyes of those who will drink
in the beauty of life and will say to themselves,
in acknowledgment of this magnificent gift,
‘It is wonderful to see.’”
~ Jules Stein, M.D.
August 18, 1964
UCLA’S JULES STEIN EYE INSTITUTE (JSEI) is the fulfillment
of a dream. It was shared by a remarkable physician, businessman,
and philanthropist, Jules Stein, M.D., and his wife, Doris Stein, to
create a world-renowned institute dedicated to the preservation of
sight and the prevention of blindness. Established in 1966 under
the leadership of Bradley R. Straatsma, M.D., J.D., its Founding
Director, and currently directed by Bartly J. Mondino, M.D., JSEI
continues to advance and expand its facilities and programs and
maintain a dedicated faculty of vision experts.
JSEI is consistently rated as the best facility for eye care and
research in the Western United States. Its clinicians, scientists,
educators, and programs have achieved international recognition.
Private philanthropy allows JSEI to continue its mission by
supporting 1) innovative scientific achievements that lead to the
discovery of new treatments for eye disease, 2) exceptional clinical
care, and 3) pioneering educational programs.
VISION SCIENCE AND CLINICAL RESEARCH
Each year, JSEI faculty carry out a broad array of laboratory- and
patient-based studies. Research faculty members share outstanding
credentials in their respective fields, a keen interest in scientific study,
and a commonality of purpose—to improve the outcome for
patients with eye and visual system disease.
Among the many research projects currently being conducted at JSEI are:
• Studying the relationship between antioxidant and other
nutritional supplement consumption and the risk of various
eye diseases
• Isolating and characterizing genes involved with inherited
retinal and corneal disorders and ocular melanoma, among
others
• Evaluating the use of povidone-iodine eye drops in children
to treat bacterial conjunctivitis and corneal infections due
to bacteria
• Applying technologies such as scanning lasers, imaging
technologies, and surgical robots for the treatment and
diagnosis of retinal disease
• Developing a stem-cell-based transplantation strategy for
treating age-related macular degeneration (AMD)
“Innovative research at JSEI offers new prospects for treatments
and cures for many vision-threatening disorders. This promising
future is what compels me to pursue a career in academic
ophthalmology.”
~ Alex Yuan, M.D., Ph.D.
EyeSTAR Resident Physician
TRAINING FUTURE GENERATIONS
JSEI and the Department of Ophthalmology at the David Geffen
School of Medicine at UCLA provide comprehensive and rigorous
training in ophthalmology and vision science to medical students,
residents, and clinical and research fellows. Integrated, multifaceted
programming offers a stimulating environment for learning. A strong
commitment to teaching by JSEI faculty assures that ophthalmic
education is maintained as a priority amid the imperatives of patient
care and research.
PATIENT CARE
JSEI, a worldwide leader and innovator in eye care, has long been
recognized for outstanding advancements in the vision sciences and
the highest quality of service for patients of all ages. Nationally and
internationally renowned faculty, representing every ophthalmic
specialty, have charted new pathways for the delivery of the finest
emerging treatments offered both at UCLA and at several Los Angeles
County hospitals. In addition, faculty, staff, residents, fellows, and
volunteers have reached out to provide basic eye care services to
underserved populations in Los Angeles and beyond.
“Physicians at JSEI instill trust and the human factor and
sincerely care about providing you with the best treatment
and resources to lead a fulfilling life.”
~ MaryAnn O’Brien
JSEI Patient
The promising physicians and medical professionals at JSEI will
discover new treatments and cures and offer clinical care to patients
locally and around the world for years to come.
HOW YOU CAN HELP
Generous philanthropic support provides the necessary resources
for JSEI faculty to offer high-quality patient care, conduct promising
and innovative research, and train the next generation of
ophthalmologists. A gift to JSEI is an investment in the future for
millions of people who suffer from debilitating eye disease. Your
contribution, no matter the size, can make a difference.
However you choose to support JSEI – whether with a current or
planned gift, you will be embarking on a partnership with one of the
world's preeminent eye research institutes.
“Philanthropy has been instrumental in the Institute’s ability to create
revolutionary new programs that will dramatically change the way eye
disease is treated for countless generations. The dedication of our friends
continues to uphold the promise of vision science.”
~ Bartly J. Mondino, M.D.
