Retina Division Department of Ophthalmology Jules Stein Eye Institute Vitreoretinal Fellowship Department of Ophthalmology and Jules Stein Eye Institute David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA University of California, Los Angeles The Vitreoretinal Fellowship of the Department of Ophthalmology and Jules Stein Eye Institute at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) is a two-year medical and surgical training program for physicians who have completed an ophthalmology residency program and are United States citizens or United States permanent residents. Under the direction of Allan E. Kreiger, M.D., the Vitreoretinal Fellowship consists of the following major components: Rhegmatogenous Retinal Disease and Vitreoretinal Surgery including: - Ocular Trauma Management, - Pediatric Vitreoretinal Surgery, and - Oncology Vitreoretinal Surgery. Medical Retinal Disease including: - Age-related Macular Degeneration, - Diabetic Retinopathy, and - Hereditary Chorioretinal Degenerations. Vitreoretinal Imaging and Diagnostic Procedures including: - Fundus Photography, Fluorescein Angiography, - Optical Coherence Tomography, and - Ultrasonography. Vitreoretinal Fellowship Training. Vitreoretinal Fellowship training includes outpatient, inpatient and surgical experience at the Jules Stein Eye Institute, Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, Olive View UCLA Medical Center, Harbor UCLA Medical Center and Greater Los Angeles Veterans Administration Medical Center. At the Jules Stein Eye Institute and Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, Fellows participate in the Retina Clinic, University Ophthalmology Associates Clinic and Ocular Oncology Clinic, as well as the Retinopathy of Prematurity Service, Retinal Dystrophy Service and Fluorescein Angiography Service. At the UCLA affiliated medical centers, Fellows participate in the Retina Clinic and related patient care medical and surgical activities. Page 2 Fellows assist faculty with vitreoretinal surgery and perform surgery (with supervision) on University Ophthalmology Associates patients, in addition to patients receiving care at Olive View UCLA Medical Center, Harbor UCLA Medical Center and Greater Los Angeles Veterans Administration Medical Center. Fellows share on call responsibilities for the Retina Division at the Jules Stein Eye Institute, Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center and UCLA affiliated medical centers. Teaching. Teaching of medical students and residents is a major part of the Vitreoretinal Fellowship. Fellows participate in teaching conferences and programs involving UCLA medical students, ophthalmology residents and Department of Ophthalmology faculty. Research. Fellows are expected to undertake independent investigation or participate in ongoing research projects involving basic and/or clinical aspects of vitreoretinal disease and surgery. Time is allocated for research and investigations are enhanced through faculty supervision, availability of laboratory facilities and access to technical assistance. Provision is made for financial support of investigations and Fellows are encouraged to report their studies in publications and presentations at national and international meetings. Allan E.
