Faculty of Translation and Interpreting Course syllabus Year 20152016 History of Translation (21557) Degree/studies: Bachelor's Degree in Applied Languages Year : fourth Term : first Number of ECTS credits: 4 ECTS Student dedication time : 100 hours Course type : Elective Plenary session teacher : Enric Gallén Language of instruction : Catalan 1. Course presentation History of Translation is a course inside the subject of Literary Translation and it is addressed to students who have an interest in Compared Literature and Theory and History of Translation. Its goals are the following: Offering and introduction to the most relevant chapter regarding the reception and translation of contemporary Catalan literature. Describing and analysing several texts from Catalan writers and translators that consider translation as an activity that completes the original literary creation. The course shows a brief history of the ideas about translation and the translations in which Catalan was the target language; in some ways, the course introduces the history of an activity that complements that of the literary creation and, thus the story of a part of the Catalan literature history, specially focused on the 20th century. 2. Competencies to be attained Ability to broaden knowledge on Catalan literature and to connect it with other literary systems. Ability to understand, analyse and comment on text about literary translation. Ability to reflect on the role of translation, reception and literary language regarding the contemporary Catalan literature. 3. Contents 3. 1. Significance and purpose of translated literature 3. 2.Tradition and "Modernism". Pompeu Fabra and "L'Avenç". Artur Masriera, translator of Shakespeare. Joan Maragall and German literature 3. 3."Noucentisme" and the establishment of literary language model. Josep Carner, translator. 3. 4.Time in between wars and cultural standardisation. Translation and publishing circle. The translators: Carles Riba. Marià Manent and Cèsar August Jordana. 3. 5.From silence times to the sixties and seventies cultural display. The translators: Josep M. de Sagarra, Joan Sales, Manuel de Pedrolo and Gabriel Ferrater. 3. 6.Political and cultural institutionalization times. Review and update of the literary language model in translation. The translators: Feliu Formosa, Francesc Parcerisas, Joan Sellent, Lluís M. Todó. 4. If the student fails one of the commentaries, he or she will have a reassessment by doing a review based on the teacher's instructions. Spelling mistakes will be taken into account when correcting the commentaries. Active involvement in class will also be taken into account for the final mark. The teacher will follow the following pattern: Text commentaries : 50 % Final report : 40 % Involvement in the classroom : 10 % 5. Methodology: training activities The Plenary Sessions (PS) will consist of the presentation and explanation of the subjects described in the program. The Seminars (S) will be based on the analysis and discussion of the texts from selected writers and translators. 6.
