Eastern Mediterranean (Turkey, Syria, Lebanon Israel, Jordan) • Much of the Eastern Mediterranean area has a dry, mostly desert or steppe climate. Limited resources such as water and land, are important to the region’s people. • The Dardanelles, Bosporus, and the Sea of Marmara make up a narrow waterway connecting the Black Sea to the Mediterranean Sea. Eastern Mediterranean (Turkey, Syria, Lebanon Israel, Jordan) • Rivers and Lakes – Jordan River – Dead Sea – contains little life, only bacteria, world’s saltiest lake, 1,312 feet below sea level (lowest point on any continent) • Mountains and Plains – Pontic and Taurus Mountains – Plateaus, hills, and valleys are father inland. • Syrian Desert is mostly rock and gravel and receives less than 5” rain annually. Arabian Peninsula, Iraq, and Iran • Home to the largest sand desert in the world: Rub’-al-Khali - means “empty quarter” because little life exists here. • Surrounded by bodies of water: Persian Gulf, Gulf of Oman, Arabian Sea, Red Sea, and Caspian Sea. Arabian Peninsula, Iraq, and Iran • Region contains four main landforms: rivers, plains, plateaus, and mountains. • Tigris and Euphrates Rivers are known as exotic rivers, or rivers that begin in humid regions and then flow to dry areas. North Africa • Sahara Desert – largest in the world, few people live here, small settlements are located near a water source such as an oasis. • Atlas Mountains • The climate is mostly hot and dry.
