Patient information What is Magnetic resonance imaging? Basic principle Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a diagnostic method which is used to generate slice images in medicine. This method is based on the principle of magnetic resonance. The magnetization of hydrogen molecules is aligned in a strong magnetic field. Through additional activation of a high frequency field (like radio waves), the magnetization is tilted and moves like a pushed spinner. After turning off the radio waves, magnetization returns to its starting position. This leads to a signal which is detected by an antenna placed on your body. Examination preparation Since you are in a strong magnetic field, it is very important to remove all metallic objects like jewellery, clothes with metallic applications, glasses and false teeth. Metallic plumbs and bridges are completely harmless. Because of the long duration (30-90 min) it is advisable to go to the toilet before the examination starts. For specific groups of persons this examination is not suitable. If you want to know if you may belong to such a group, please complete the questionnaire or speak with your physician. Examination procedure You will be placed comfortably on our examination table. For most examinations we need an ECG throughout the examination. Therefore electrodes will be placed on your chest. For the measurement of the magnetic signals we will place an antenna on the area of interest. During scanning you will hear a loud noise. To reduce this “knocking” you get ear plugs or head phones. Throughout the whole examination you will be monitored by a camera. Through an interphone you can talk to us at any time. With a small bell you can ring if you want to stop the examination. For some scans it is important to hold your breath. We will lead you through this process continuously. Please do not hesitate to ask if you have any questions.
