Welcome to Sisters Hospital Comprehensive Cancer Center Medical Oncology is closely integrated with hematology, surgical oncology, and radiation therapy. l Sisters Hospital collaborates with three area facilities that provide Radiation Oncology services. All are staffed with board certified radiation oncologists. l Our Urologic Oncology medical staff is fully trained and certified in new techniques, such as laser therapy, brachytherapy, and cryosurgery, enhancing their capability for handling nearly every phase of cancer treatment. It’s important to remember that you are not alone. Sisters Hospital joined the ranks of America’s best in cancer care when it was recognized by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer as a Comprehensive Cancer Center. Only one in four hospitals nationwide receive this special approval. It acknowledges the quality of our comprehensive, multidisciplinary cancer care program. Receiving care at a Commission on Cancer approved hospital like Sisters ensures that you have access to: l quality care close to home, l comprehensive care offering a range of state of-the-art services and equipment, l a multi-specialty team approach to coordinate the best treatment options available to cancer patients, l information about cancer clinical trials, education, and support, l care that is provided on the hospital’s dedicated oncology unit, and l ongoing monitoring and improvement of care. Your Cancer Care Team Sisters Hospital has a long and rich tradition of caring for patients with diseases of the colorectal region, including Colorectal Oncology. This team effort involves surgeons, oncologists, and endostomal therapists. l Cancer patients at Sisters Hospital are cared for by an exceptionally skilled team of clinical cancer specialists in concert with a dedicated multidisciplinary team of supportive services. Doctors and nurses coordinate the services of our multidisciplinary cancer team. Education, assessment, symptom management, and referrals are tailored to meet individual patient needs. Oncology nurses dispensing chemotherapy are certified by the Administration of Chemotherapy and Biotherapy. l Radiologists and technologists provide essential diagnostic testing for cancer detection and treatment including gallium scans for tumor localization, muga scans, whole body scans, bone scans, and more. l Hospice services are provided in conjunction with Hospice Buffalo, Inc., and the hospital’s nursing staff. Sisters Hospital has two dedicated Hospice suites on the oncology inpatient unit that provide a comfortable, home-like atmosphere for both patients and family. l Rehabilitation specialists help patients regain function, restore strength and range of motion, reduce pain, prevent re-injury, and adapt to physical limitations. Provided through CHS Partners In Rehab, rehabilitation’s goal is to achieve the highest degree of functional independence. l Spiritual care is an integral member of the healing team. Our multi-denominational team is available to help patients and their families dealing with the effects of cancer. l Social workers assist you and your family with how cancer affects your life. They can help find support groups, counseling, or other related services. l Massage therapy is used as part of the treatment plan to help decrease pain, anxiety, depression, fatigue, and nausea. Provided by licensed massage therapists, this service has been found to enhance a sense of well-being. l Clinical nutritionists help maintain and improve dietary intake. Recommendations about nutrition are designed to help build strength to assist patients with the effects of cancer and its treatment. Nutritional counseling sessions are available. l Oncologic disease of the gastrointestinal tract (including liver and pancreas), the lymphatic system, lung, skin, and soft tissues, is managed by a group of specialty board-certified surgeons in General and Thoracic Surgical Oncology. l Cancer care at Sisters Hospital Breast Cancer remains the number one cancer treated at Sisters Hospital. l Gynecologic Oncology services include the treatment and surgical management of pre-malignant disease consultation for benign gynecologic disease that may require surgical treatment beyond the normal scope of gynecologic training. l The hospital’s Breast Care Center evaluates both benign and malignant breast conditions. The center’s comprehensive program includes mammography, surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, support groups, and spiritual counseling. All are available to patients with breast cancer. New innovations in breast cancer treatment are also available to patients treated at Sisters Hospital through approved Institutional Review Board (IRB) protocols. Partial breast radiation with mammosite allows patients to complete their radiation therapy in five days instead of the standard six and one-half week program. Advances like this are just one way Sisters’ Breast Care Center continues to provide state-of-the-art and cutting-edge treatment for breast cancer patients. Pathology services are enhanced by a pathologist with an international reputation in gynecologic pathology. l Plastic and Reconstructive Services at the hospital encompasses breast reconstruction, expanding implant reconstructions, etc; primary surgery for skin cancers including basal cell carcinomas, squamous cell carcinomas, and melanomas; and more. Sisters Hospital’s plastic surgeons are board certified with extensive training in complicated reconstructive procedures. l
