Coping with cancer can be overwhelming and
challenging. It’s important to remember that you
are not alone.
Sisters Hospital joined the ranks of America’s
best in cancer care when it was recognized by
the American College of Surgeons Commission
on Cancer as a Comprehensive Cancer Center.
Only one in four hospitals nationwide receive
this special approval. It acknowledges the quality
of our comprehensive, multidisciplinary cancer
care program.
Receiving care at a Commission on Cancer
approved hospital like Sisters ensures that you
have access to:
l quality care close to home,
l comprehensive care offering a range of state of-the-art services and equipment,
l a multi-specialty team approach to coordinate
the best treatment options available to cancer
patients,
l information about cancer clinical trials,
education, and support,
l care that is provided on the hospital’s
dedicated oncology unit, and
l ongoing monitoring and improvement of care.
Your Cancer Care Team
Sisters Hospital has a long and rich tradition of
caring for patients with diseases of the
colorectal region, including Colorectal
Oncology. This team effort involves surgeons,
oncologists, and endostomal therapists.
l
Cancer patients at Sisters Hospital are cared
for by an exceptionally skilled team of clinical
cancer specialists in concert with a dedicated
multidisciplinary team of supportive services.
Doctors and nurses coordinate the services of
our multidisciplinary cancer team. Education,
assessment, symptom management, and
referrals are tailored to meet individual
patient needs. Oncology nurses dispensing
chemotherapy are certified by the
Administration of Chemotherapy and
Biotherapy.
l
Radiologists and technologists provide
essential diagnostic testing for cancer
detection and treatment including gallium
scans for tumor localization, muga scans,
whole body scans, bone scans, and more.
l
Hospice services are provided in conjunction
with Hospice Buffalo, Inc., and the hospital’s
nursing staff. Sisters Hospital has two
dedicated Hospice suites on the oncology
inpatient unit that provide a comfortable,
home-like atmosphere for both patients and
family.
l
Rehabilitation specialists help patients regain
function, restore strength and range of motion,
reduce pain, prevent re-injury, and adapt to
physical limitations. Provided through CHS
Partners In Rehab, rehabilitation’s goal is to
achieve the highest degree of functional
independence.
l
Spiritual care is an integral member of the
healing team. Our multi-denominational team
is available to help patients and their families
dealing with the effects of cancer.
l
Social workers assist you and your family with
how cancer affects your life. They can help find
support groups, counseling, or other related
services.
l
Massage therapy is used as part of the
treatment plan to help decrease pain, anxiety,
depression, fatigue, and nausea. Provided by
licensed massage therapists, this service has
been found to enhance a sense of well-being.
l
Clinical nutritionists help maintain and
improve dietary intake. Recommendations
about nutrition are designed to help build
strength to assist patients with the effects of
cancer and its treatment. Nutritional
counseling sessions are available.
l
Oncologic disease of the gastrointestinal tract
(including liver and pancreas), the lymphatic
system, lung, skin, and soft tissues, is managed
by a group of specialty board-certified
surgeons in General and Thoracic Surgical
Oncology.
l
Cancer care at Sisters Hospital
Breast Cancer remains the number one cancer
treated at Sisters Hospital.
l
Gynecologic Oncology services include the
treatment and surgical management of
pre-malignant disease consultation for benign
gynecologic disease that may require surgical
treatment beyond the normal scope of
gynecologic training.
l
The hospital’s Breast Care Center evaluates
both benign and malignant breast conditions.
The center’s comprehensive program includes
mammography, surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, support groups, and spiritual
counseling. All are available to patients with
breast cancer.
New innovations in breast cancer treatment
are also available to patients treated at Sisters
Hospital through approved Institutional Review
Board (IRB) protocols. Partial breast radiation
with mammosite allows patients to complete
their radiation therapy in five days instead of
the standard six and one-half week program.
Advances like this are just one way Sisters’
Breast Care Center continues to provide
state-of-the-art and cutting-edge treatment for
breast cancer patients.
Pathology services are enhanced by a
pathologist with an international reputation in
gynecologic pathology.
l
Plastic and Reconstructive Services at the
hospital encompasses breast reconstruction,
expanding implant reconstructions, etc; primary
surgery for skin cancers including basal cell
carcinomas, squamous cell carcinomas, and
melanomas; and more. Sisters Hospital’s plastic
surgeons are board certified with extensive
training in complicated reconstructive
procedures.
