In the Qualifying Round, on March 14th & 15th, the entire field of
85+ teams will battle for the most miles with the top 16 teams
moving forward…
So on those two days, we encourage all of our CyberCycle riders to pedal your hearts out!

we advance!
March is National Kidney Month
What’s a kidney?
 It’s an organ shaped like kidney beans, each one about 6 inches long, located either side of the spine.
 They cleanse the blood of toxins and transform the waste into urine.
 Each kidney weighs about 160 grams and together they filter 200 liters of fluid every 24 hours.
 It is possible to live a healthy and active life with only one functioning kidney.
When the kidneys are not working properly, harmful toxins and excess fluids build up in the body, which
may cause the symptoms of kidney failure. These symptoms can include high blood pressure, extreme
tiredness or lethargy, persistent headaches, swelling in the face and ankles, fluid retention and/or lower
back pain.
Water and electrolytes
All the cells in the body, apart from those of the outer skin, are surrounded by a fluid called the
extracellular fluid. For the cells of the body to work properly, the extracellular fluid needs to have a stable
composition of salts and acidity. The salt and water balance is maintained by a series of hormones acting
on the kidney. The kidneys recognize and act upon a series of messages that vary according to how
much fluid is drunk. These mechanisms are very efficient. If the body is in a satisfactory balance,
approximately 80% of ingested fluid is excreted within an hour.
Hormones
The kidneys secrete a number of hormones, including rennin erythropoietin and Vitamin D. If the kidneys
aren’t functioning correctly, too much rennin can be produced, increasing blood pressure and sometimes
resulting in hypertension. This is why a number of people with kidney diseases also have high blood
pressure.
If kidney function diminishes, insufficient Erythropoietin is produced and the number of red blood cells
being produced will fall, resulting in anemia. This is why many people with reduced kidney function will
have anemia – a low blood count. Vitamin D is also a hormone essential for a number of bodily
functions. In people with impaired kidney function, there is often a low blood calcium and an inadequate
amount of Vitamin D, resulting in muscle weakness and a softening of the bones.
Age is a significant risk factor for chronic kidney disease. The high prevalence of this disease is the result
of a combination of age and cardiovascular risk factors that accumulate over the years. Having
hypertension, cardiovascular disease or diabetes predisposes people in this population to a high burden
of chronic kidney disease. However, the equations used in the diagnosis of this disease are configured so
that a healthy person could be misclassified. It is important to have in-depth conversations with
diagnosing physicians before agreeing to treatment.

Q&A Session with Pat Mozee
Q: How long have you been coming to EngAge Wellness?
A: About 8 months.
Q: What activities do you participate in?
A: I do cardio, upper body strength, treadmill, rower, and bike.
Q: What is your favorite aspect of EngAge Wellness?
A: The staff is awesome (Heather). It is a fun place to be. You don’t
have to worry about being judged here. Everyone enjoys themselves, the company is great. I look forward to
coming here, working out, and enjoying myself.
Q: How has your motivation to exercise changed, since you started coming here?
A: When I don’t want to come exercise, I make myself come in. Once I get here, I’m so glad and ready to get
started. I always start with the treadmill and once I’m finished with that, I’m ready for the rest of my workout.
I set a goal in my mind, to try to do all the machines in my program.
Q: What advice would you give other EngAge participants, to help them achieve their fitness goals?
A: Set a goal and work towards it. Set a time to exercise on each machine and do it. Then work to add another five
minutes by the next week. Don’t push yourself, take your time. You don’t have to rush here. You can work at
your own pace.
Q: How has exercise help manage any chronic conditions?
A: I have fibromyalgia. It helps to exercise and stretch. I feel much better after working out. I look forward to
exercising once I get here.
Q: Any tips for successful ageing you would like to share?
A: Just don’t give up. If you miss a day or two, get up and come back to exercise. Just do one machine, then work
up to two and so forth. Keep up the good work. We’re all trying to stay healthy and fit. You can do it!
A few facts about me:
I am from Omaha. After high school I moved to Missouri. Then in 1987 moved back to Omaha. I worked for
Omaha Public Schools for 28 years, and retired in 2016.
I have two children, six grandchildren, and four great grandchildren.
I love to read. James Patterson, Stuart Woods, David Balducci are a few of my favorite authors. I love football: the
Nebraska Cornhuskers, Green Bay Packers, Kansas City Chiefs, and Pittsburg Steelers. I enjoy basketball: the
Creighton Bluejays and the NBA playoffs.
I like to listen to gospel, jazz and blues music. I like to take walks. Above all the things I like to do, God, and family
come first. Love sunny days, window shopping (no money), and coming to EngAge Wellness. After all that, just
relaxing and watching a good movie.
Thank you EngAge Wellness for all you do to make my exercise life good. A special thanks to Heather for all her
work with me.
