Joseph Nonato and Sgt. The spring musical in 1984 was the '70's "hip and Broadway theatrelife" musical Applause, starring Marlene MacDonald as the show’s lead, with secondary roles played by Joe Docherty, Andrew Gallici, Sharon Buhagiar, and Kara Lea Smart. In the 1984 fall production, Theatre De La Salle produced a successful, scary and, intense production, (the longest running Broadway play), Ira Levin's Deathtrap, with lead roles played by Andrew Gallici and Joe Docherty. In 1985 - the 25th year of De La Salle's annual Broadway productions (even thought the school had been presenting shows as far back as 1955) - Theatre De La Salle gave its audience the famous musical, Man of La Mancha, with a successful sold out run of two weeks. Del grad Luigi Morano (1984) returned to play the coveted role of Sancho opposite Ben Cekuta’s Don Quixote. Serving as Stage Manager was Del alum Paul Corcoran (1982). The 1986 fun, historical, and high-energy musical 'Camelot' introduced us to a new lead once again, Mark Onyschuk in the role of King Arthur, after having played a supporting role in the 1985 spring musical. Bob Gardner, who made his stage debut in the 1985 production of Count Dracula appeared as Lancelot in Camelot. 1987 resurrected the Broadway musical Godspell - the modern rock & roll retelling of the life of Christ. In 1986, Theatre De La Salle incorporated into its auditorium Ben Cekuta's company "Theatre on-the-Hill.” Productions included alumni and professional actors: John Steinbeck’s Of Mice & Men with Ted Gallagher (1981), Bob Gardiner (1985), and Marlene Macdonald; Bob Randall’s 6Rms Riv Vu with Sharon Buhagiar, Deathtrap with Andrew Gallici (1985) and Ted Gallagher (1981), Neil Simon’s Plaza Suite with De La Salle staff member John Cheley and alumnus Andrew Gallici (1985). Theatre has a long-standing tradition at De La Salle College. I am thrilled to see that tradition live on with the talented young men and women gracing the De La Salle stage today. Thank you for inviting me to go “back to the 80’s.” In memory and thanks to all...too many to mention! Kudos to cast and crew - past and present! Ben Cekuta CREDITS THEATRE DE LA SALLE Looking Back with 1980’s De La Salle College “Oaklands” Artistic Director BEN CEKUTA De La Salle established a profound and majestic, annual theatre tradition. Ben Cekuta, the Artistic Director of Theatre De La Salle from 1977-1993, worked as a professional in the theatre world and, with his highstandards and industry connections, introduced to Theatre De La Salle the idea that the shows should be fun to be a part of and recognized for the amount of hard work that was invested in them; to be treated as a respected art and business whose participants were rewarded with life-time memories. It was not so much about producing professional actors or crew members, but more about learning how to become a better audience, so that when they went beyond the walls of their theatre, they could see performances and performers in an unbiased way and appreciating the same effort and dedication that is required of all artists, both amateur and professional. As the curtain came down on the 1970's, the 1980's was ready to become a decade of artistic and recognized growth for Theatre De La Salle. The spring of 1980 marked the 20th anniversary of the annual musical at De La Salle. West Side Story started this new era and starred brothers Chris and Jerry McGroarty and, for the first time ever in its history, two staff members - Father Mike Luchka and Frank Burns - playing the adult roles, in this huge successful show. The closing night performance was honoured to have the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, Pauline McGibbon and her entourage in its audience. Theatre De La Salle's reputation also included annual Fall shows. In 1981, without a scheduled musical, the theatre presented two plays - The Diary of Anne Frank and Butterflies Are Free, with a memorable performance by Chris McGroarty, showcasing his skills as an actor. Because De La Salle was an all-boys high school, all female roles had to audition, with participants coming from many sister-schools in the Toronto area. 1982 brought back a traditional Broadway musical comedy, Carnival. Talented female leads of this musical came from St. Joseph Wellesley High School - Sharon Buhagiar and Marlene MacDonald. Joining them was 'up and coming' actor and Del student Joe Docherty, and continuing in his recognized De La Salle male lead was Chris McGroarty, with Crispin Redhead rounding out the principal cast. Crispin went on to become a successful dancer and is now a prominent work-out guru and Gyrotonic Master. 1983 brought to the Del stage a second musical - Webber and Rice’s Jesus Christ Superstar, with new lead, Joe Docherty, playing Jesus and, in his graduating year at De La Salle and as President of Student Council, Chris McGroarty playing Judas, with the role of Mary Magdalene played by Marlene MacDonald. Del alumnus Curtis Begley (1977) served as Stage Manager. The show had over a two-week run, another first. Norm Davies, the school's principal, recognized that Theatre De La Salle was a "class act", thus quality became its priority. The orchestras were always comprised of professional musicians who gave up their time to perform as an ensemble that focused on quality and professional standards. On the show's closing night, the cast members had the privilege to perform for the Hon. Art Eggleton, the Mayor of Toronto, and his wife. He was quite impressed and raved that a high school in his city could have such a successful and on-going annual theatre production of such high calibre. Br. Domenic Viggiani, FSC... MESSAGE from THE DIRECTOR Last year, Theatre De La Salle celebrated its revival by staging the popular Andrew Lloyd Webber biblical musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. The response was overwhelmingly positive from the audiences - proof that the De La Salle community was hungry for student theatre. The support and encouragement of Br. Domenic, Mr. Pupo, the Board of Directors, and that of the wider De La Salle community, has cemented a firm foundation for future theatrical productions on the De La Salle stage. For those who can still remember the 80‘s, it was a decade that defined a generation; a decade of people, decisions, and inventions that changed our future. In a recent National Geographic documentary, 80‘s teen heartthrob Rob Lowe said, “The way we live today is a direct result of things that started in the '80s.” Getting our cast to embrace the fashions, fads, music, and slang of an era they never experienced, was my goal from the very beginning. It was necessary that each of them went back to the 80’s and explored it for themselves. I am hopeful that the results of their research will be evident in this production. Early in her rise to stardom, pop icon Madonna said, “I stand for freedom of expression, doing what you believe in, and going after your dreams.” Her ambitious sentiments sum up the desires of every aspiring performer of the 80’s and of those pursuing a performing arts career today. In essence, this is what theatre is all about: expressing, believing, dreaming. It begins with Arts Education. A thriving Drama program at the College, a student body populated by talented singers, musicians, and performers, the support of Administration, staff, and parents all these factors have borne the results you will witness on our stage at this performance. The late Whitney Houston sums up my philosophy when she sang, “I believe the children are our future, teach them well and let them lead the way. Show them all the beauty they possess inside. Give them a sense of pride ... Let the children's laughter remind us how we used to be.” As you can imagine, a show of this scale requires an incredible commitment of time and energy, and a deeply-rooted passion for theatre and the performing arts. Rehearsals began last October; our final rehearsal took place Thursday morning before an audience of enthusiastic elementary school children. While you will witness the fruits of our labour when our cast members take to the stage, I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge those who laughed, cried, raised their voices, deflated egos, worried a little, and celebrated right along with me during each step of the creative process. Many individuals are listed in this program to whom we extend our deepest gratitude for the varying degrees of support they have provided. But I would like to specifically acknowledge my “totally awesome” colleagues and collaborators Mr. Marc Labriola and Mrs. Marlene McGroarty - for the hours of time they dedicated, the endless ideas they generated, and the ongoing support and encouragement they provided me and the members of our cast. A “tubular” and much-deserved nod also goes to Mr. Norman Lue Tam, Ms. Anne Hogan, and Mr. Jerry McGroarty for all their leadership and creativity in designing and constructing our beautiful set and prop pieces. With the assistance of their Visual and Media Arts students, they took the cast and the audience back to the 80’s. Let’s hear it for the boys - Nick and Patrick Andison and their team - for making us look and sound “gnarly.” And to our guest choreographer Melissa Virdo for teaching us to cut loose and our visiting musicians, Chris, Erik, Adam, Lily, Nick, and Braxton, under the musical leadership of Jordann Zaza, for getting us into the groove. I am so proud of our Back to the 80’s cast and crew. They took their passion and made it happen. They continue to be the reason I enjoy doing what I do. “I’ve had the time of my life” and tonight, it is with no hesitation, that I proudly dedicate this performance to each and every cast and crew member and salute the many 80’s icons that inspired them. They have brought this production to life through song, dance, performance, design, construction, and promotion, and have truly come to realize that, with heart and soul and perseverance, “we can build this dream together...nothing’s gonna stop us now!” Mr. M. Luchka Message from Message from Br. Domenic Viggiani, FSC Mr. Joseph Pupo President, De La Salle College “Oaklands” Dear De La Salle Theatre Patrons: As we celebrate the 1980’s in song and dance in this year's musical production, I am drawn back to those now somewhat distant days when I was in my first years of religious life and my teaching career. At the start of the decade, I was here teaching French and then grades seven and eight. By the middle of the 1980’s, I was off to Cardinal Newman High School where I spent some happy years teaching religion and ESL and assisting with its cooperative education programme. The end of the decade would find me in Australia. Like all decades, each has its moments to remember. The repatriation of the BNA, the Mulroney years and the constitutional debates, the Edmonton Oilers, the first visit of John Paul II and the fall of communism, are just some of the things that defined these years. Music and dance are other ways that define that period of time. This is no less true of the decade we recall in our theatre production this Spring. Let us join our young performers, who have worked so hard, in recalling the sounds and movements of an age when the world seemed less mad and life a little less complicated. Many heartfelt thanks to Mr. Luchka, Mr. Labriola, Mrs. McGroarty, and the entire cast who have shown great pride in continuing the theatrical tradition here at De La Salle. Principal, De La Salle College “Oaklands” De La Salle College, over its history, has produced many musicals and plays and since re-privatization, performances such as Oliver, The Sound of Music, The Importance of Being Earnest, Inherit the Wind, and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat have continued the school’s commitment to the Arts, while providing the school community an opportunity to share in such a meaningful undertaking. This year should be no different as our talented students take us Back to the 80’s. Many volunteers have participated in many aspects of the production. Whether students are acting, singing, dancing or participating in the management of the backstage, props, lighting, or sound, drama productions provide our students another medium that creates a spirit of community and acknowledges their many gifts. We, as a school community, are proud of their efforts and their dedication. I am confident that Back to the 80’s will be fun to watch; and some of us, without hinting at our age, may sing along as we recall the many songs that defined that era. Special recognition and appreciation goes to Mr. Michael Luchka. As Director, he has, once again, organized a successful performance. His efforts, commitment, energy, and passion for the College are commendable. Please, come join the fun! “The stage is not merely the meeting place of a" the arts, but is also the return of art to life.” Oscar Wilde
