Beginning 2013 AQUA I.W. installed a complete and
customized waste water treatment installation for the new
poultry processing plant of Cargill, situated in Lai’an, Anhui,
China.
The production process in Lai’an covers each stage of the poultry supply
chain, including chicken breeding, raising, feed production, hatching,
slaughtering and processing. All waste water which is originated by the
different processes will be treated with the AQUA I.W. water treatment
system. Owning to its strong ties with Marel (formerly Stork Poultry
Processing) AQUA I.W. has an extensive and advanced knowledge of this
production process. Therefor AQUA can provide the customer with tailor
made solutions.
AQUA I.W. is fully responsible for the design, engineering, manufacturing,
installation and commissioning of the waste water treatment installation.
This work is primary done in our headquarters in Lichtenvoorde, The
Netherlands. Full 24/7 support is available by our large local office in
Beijing and the headquarters in Lichtenvoorde, The Netherlands.
Middle of 2013 the installation was successfully handed over to the factory
team.

Solution
Red water area
Due to its unique practical know-how and vast experience in the poultry
industry, AQUA I.W. was able to prepare the optimal solution for Cargill
Lai’an Anhui.
The proposed system comprises a ‘red water area’ with the appropriate
screening systems, from here the water flows to a high efficient
physical/chemical pre-treatment. Further treatment is done by a biological
treatment with a clarifier system (BioClar®). As final step the water is
disinfected by means of chemicals. After treatment by the AQUA I.W.
installation the water is suitable for discharge to the sewer system.
Sludge coming from the waste water installation is dewatered by a filter
belt press.
Notable for the system is the possibility for capacity increase in different
phases. Cargill Lai’an increases the slaughtering numbers over a period
of two years. In each stage the system will achieve the discharge
requirements.
Screening of the raw waste water is needed
to protect the installation from large solids
which can demolish equipment.
The red water area is located next to the
production area for quick removal of these
solids.
Waste water from the factory is pumped to
the red water area. This area functions standalone and comprises three internal fed rotary
screens. These screen have a large selfcleaning ability and are optimal suitable for
waste water from poultry processing. After
screening the water is pumped towards the
further treatment which is located 350 meter
from the red water area.
Combined physical / chemical pre-treatment
The high efficient physical/chemical pre-treatment removes
sediment, suspended and emulsified pollution from the waste
water. The physical/chemical pre-treatment comprises an
equalisation basin, flocculator and Dafinci® Dissolved Air
Flotation.
In the equalisation basin (installed underground) peaks in
flow, pollution and pH are leveled to achieve a more constant
water composition towards the flocculator. In the flocculator
chemicals are dosed to concentrate the emulsified and
suspended pollutants in a flock like agglomerate, which can
be separated from the water by flotation. The DAF unit creates
micro-air-bubbles that become attached to these flocks,
increasing the buoyancy of these particles and let them float
on the surface. There they will be removed by a scraper.
Biological treatment
Sludge separation BioClar®
The waste water will be further treated in a biological
treatment with sludge water separation by means of a
clarifier.
The water will flow into the selector. Optimal mixing between
waste water and RAS (Return Activated Sludge) limits the
growth of filamentous bacteria and stimulates growth of flock
bacteria which are most suitable for sludge separation
systems.
After the selector, the wastewater will flow into the aeration
basin that is filled with an activated sludge-water mixture.
Activated sludge consists of flocs of bacteria. In the presence
of oxygen, the bacteria will decompose the biodegradable
constituents in the wastewater. For this oxygen supply
maintenance free bottom aeration is installed.
The activated sludge must be separated
from the purified water. In the AQUA I.W.
BioClar® system, sedimentation is applied to
separate the activated sludge from the
water. Activated sludge is slightly heavier
than water and will therefor accumulate on
the bottom of the clarifier. Here a scraper
will convey it to the center where it will be
removed.
The clarified water will flow slowly towards
the outer circumference of the clarifier,
where it will leave and flow towards final
step. In this step it will be disinfected before
it will be discharged to the sewer.
AQUA I.W. is specialized in the industrial treatment
of process waste water and sludge. Owing to its
strong ties with the Stork group, active in such fields
as food production and textile refinement, AQUA
has extensive and advanced knowledge of industrial
production processes. AQUA can therefor provide
its client’s with tailored solutions for all phases of a
production process, in the form of sub-trajectories
or as integral end-of-pipe project. The following
objectives are pivotal for all processes, from process
water preparation trough to purposeful treatment
of waste water and collecting and processing
separated sludge:
• Reduction of water consumption
• Minimization of initial and operational costs
• Less energy consumption and work
• Purposeful implementation of systems and components
