Social Studies Lesson Plans Date: Period: By: Ryan Teague Topic/Title Han and Tang Dynasties Part 1 Question this lesson will answer What were the contributions of the Han Dynasty? Tang Dynasty? Purpose/Rationale/Goals of the day's lesson: The purpose of this lesson is to familiarize the students with the Han and Tang Dynasty. The goals of this lesson are to show the students: 1. This importance of Wudi. 2. Government was run based on the teachings of Confucius. 3. The civil service exam 4. Contributions in technology, science, and the arts. How does this lesson fit into unit? Where have you been and where are you going? This lesson fits in to a section dealing with the dynasties and contributions of early china. This unit has also covered the geography and religions of China. Objectives: (think about cognitive, affective, and psychomotor). Are they measurable SWBAT: 1. Identify and define the civil service exam. 2. List and describe the contributions of the Han to present society. 3. List and describe the achievements of the Tang Dynasty to present society NCSS themes w/ indicators II: Time, Continuity, and Change V: Individuals, Groups, and Institutions. VIII: Science, Technology and Society Standards of Learning: 8.8: The student will describe and compare selected civilizations in Asia, Africa, and the Americas, in terms of chronology, location, geography, social structures, form of government, economy, religion, and contribution to later civilizations, including: • China, with emphasis on the Tang dynasty; the traditions, customs, beliefs, and significance of Buddhism; the impact of Confucianism and Taoism; and the construction of the Great Wall. Go to Computer Lab Content /Methods / Procedures Computer activity Students will perform an internet search that will allow them to research the Han and Tang Dynasties. They will follow a work sheet. Conclusion/ in class consolidation Writing activity Have the student write up an advertisement encouraging people to come to China under the Tang Dynasty. Assessment of student learning -When and where do you check for understanding/learning? Assessment will be made based on completion of the worksheet, the writing activity, and in an end of unit test. 35 min Hand out directions
