The Lightning Thief, Rick Riordan November 17, 2009 The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan is the first book in the Percy Jackson & the Olympian series. Percy Jackson only wanted to get his family back together and find out who his dad is, but after a vacation gone wrong, Percy finds himself without a dad or mom. His mom disappears in gold light right in front of him after being attacked by the Minotaur. He finds out he’s the son of one of the Big Three gods. The Big Three godsZeus, Poseidon, and Hades- promised to never have kids again. Even worse, Percy is being blamed for stealing Zeus’s symbol of power, his lightning bolt. Percy must go on a quest with his best friend Grover the satyr and Annabeth, daughter of Athena, to retrieve the lightning bolt and stop a war between the gods. Will Percy stop the war? Who stole the lightning bolt? Can Percy save his mom? Find out in The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan. I rated this book a ten because it is adventurous, funny, exciting, and full of mystery. For Example, Percy is on vacation with his mom when his best friend, Grover comes and says something’s coming. Percy doesn’t know what he’s talking about but his mom does. His mom gets him and Grover in the car and drives toward an unknown destination when lighting hits the car. The Minotaur is right behind them Percy must fight the Minotaur who is in nothing but underwear to hide his hairy body. I would recommend this book to boys and girls who like mythology, comedy, action, and excitement. Percy and Annabeth must go into a water park when the god Ares makes a deal with Percy. They have to go into the Tunnel of Love in order to get Ares’ shield. They get attacked by mechanical spiders made by Hephaestus and have to learn to trust each other in order to get out. The book’s setting was across the U.S.A. It made the book adventurous and exciting. Percy has to travel from New York to Los Angeles before the day of the summer solstice which gives him only ten days to find Zeus’s stolen property, find the thief, save his mom, and return the lightning bolt to Zeus to stop the war between the gods.
