Presents: Resource materials and lesson plans with worksheets and activities for you classroom! Teaching Guide/Lesson Plan Vocabulary After watching the DVD use the following worksheets to understand the vocabulary and key terms for each segment. 1. Landforms (answers provided for the instructor) 2. Different places on Earth (answers provided for the instructor) 3. Bodies of Water (answers provided for the instructor) Vocabulary This DVD is packed with vocabulary material. Please refer to the sections below for vocabulary lists. Extensions: Diagram Geographic Features Ask your students to find a picture of one of the geographic land forms and create a diagram of it on paper or in 3 dimensions. Report writing Ask each student to write a report on one of the geographic terms listed. Travel Posters Ask your students to choose one or two of the geographic terms listed on the vocabulary sheets below and ask them to create a travel poster incorporating that term. Encourage them to think about how their term(s) can be an attraction for tourists and write text that reflects that. Make Flashcards Create flashcards using index cards with a word, or picture, or combination of both on one side and the definitions on the other side. © 2010 Mazz.com Teaching Guide/Lesson Plan Lessons & Activities Understanding Rain Erosion of Landforms Subjects: Grades: Style: Science, Social Science 3-5 Objective: Students will understand the effects of erosion on landforms. Lesson: There are three aspects to this lesson plan: Building, effecting and observing. Materials: • Foil pan • Dirt • Small rocks • Water • Eyedropper • Spray bottle with mist setting 1. Building the landform (mountain). To build a mountain have your students work together to collect dirt and small rocks. Poke several holes in the bottom of the pan to allow water to escape. Pack the material tightly, in the shape of a mountain and use a large foil pan for the base. Clear any dirt away from the holes. Be sure that students pack some rocks into the side of the “mountain”. Day 1. Observe the mountain. Draw the shape of it. If your classroom has access to a digital camera, make a digital diary of the mountain beginning with the day it was created. If students will be recording on paper their findings, use the worksheet provided. Day 2. Add rain to the mountain. For this day, have your students use the eye dropper to simulate heavy rain. Fill the eyedropper five times and allow the water to drop from about 6 to 8 inches over the mountain. Let the water fall in heavy drops. Observe and record what happens. Note the amount of dirt on the bottom of the foil pan. Be sure any standing water drains from the pan. Day 3. Mist the mountain with the spray bottle. Throughly wet each side of the mountian. Observe and record. Repeat until the effects of water erosion can be seen. Ask your students to complete the worksheet provided. © 2010 Mazz.com Teaching Guide/Lesson Plan Name____________________ Class________________________ Date_________________________ Understanding Rain Erosion of Landforms Describe how the mountain was made: ______________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ Record your observations about the addition of water to the mountain: Day One: Eyedropper Rain Day Two: Mist Rain Observations: Observations: Day Three: Eyedropper Rain Observations: Day Four: Mist Rain Observations: Day Five: How has the mountain changed? Materials: • Weather diary (provided) • Thermometers • Rain gage • Barometer • Wind speed gage Lesson: Have your students fill out the worksheet that is provided with observations daily for one month. Have them record and observe information at approximately the same time each day. Information collected will included daily temperature readings, daily rain fall amounts and general daily observations of the weather. At the end of the month graph the data. Make a separate graph for temperature and rain/fall. What were the averages? Next ask your students to compare and contrast the average rainfall and temperatures of a city that is at least 500 miles to the north or south of your location. Use an Almanac to look up and record the information. As a bonus activity: Encourage your students, to find a city using the almanac that is 500 miles away from your location. Discuss how the average temperatures and rainfall differs from you location. Does that make it a different climate? Ask your students to make a theory about what the differences mean and how the differences might happen. World Almanac online. If your students have access to the Internet, they can use the Infoplease site online at: http://www.infoplease.com/ © 2010 Mazz.com Teaching Guide/Lesson Plan Weather Diary Name ______________ Class_______________ Date/Time Temperature Clouds Rain Wind Humidity Air / Pressure Record your observations and readings daily.
