Social Networking — A Double-edged Sword There are pros to social networking, however there are also cons, such as harassment and intellectual extremism (both religious and ideological). This session will address these concerns and show you how to protect yourself and your children. Positive Energy An introduction to energy that will explore the difference between positive and negative energy and the importance of self-knowledge. How does energy influence selection and decision-making. What are idle thoughts made of? How to do I create a positive attitude? How can I be happy? Positive Energy and Family Happiness An introduction to energy that will explore how to make your family happy. The workshop, whose slogan is “Read and Challenge,” will look at reading challenge competitions that encourage children to summarise books and therefore increase reading retention. The Story Time Show Gather around little ones, it’s Story Time! Join Ilyas and Duck on their adventures as author Omar re-enacts his exciting stories to a mesmerised (and sometimes drooling) group of toddlers. Shadow Tales A modern workshop designed to employ “shadows” in the creation and telling of stories. The presentation is innovative, interesting and enjoyable. Help Me Read All visitors are welcome to attend this workshop and read to children to help them gain an appreciation for reading. This is part of the El Kheir (charity) initiative, which was launched by the Future Generations Library to coincide with this Year of Giving in the UAE. World’s Classics This workshop aims to introduce children to their cultural heritage through age-appropriate excerpts from the world’s classics. Read and Enjoy A range of activities and electronic games related to reading. Sheikh Zayed: A Trilogy “Our Leaders, Our Role Models.” This independent reading programme’s slogan is “Our Leaders, Our Role Models.” This workshop will present and discuss the children’s collection about Sheikh Zayed, the founding father of the United Arab Emirates. Reading 15 Friends of the Galaxy In this semi-fictional story each planet produces and uses its own type of recyclable material and must separate the waste and clean the galaxy properly. The purpose of the story is to raise awareness in children about the importance of public cleanliness, sorting of waste at the source, teamwork and cooperation. The Fragrance of Our Heritage “Arabic Coffee the traditional Arabic Gulf ritual of hospitality” In this workshop we seek to connect children with the heritage of their ancestors and to introduce them to the traditional Gulf ritual of Arabic coffee. Children will learn about this symbol of Arab hospitality through the book “The Methods of Preparing and Ritual of Serving Arabic Coffee”. They will handle the tools used in the making of Arabic coffee, learn the terminology and taste samples of different types of Arabic coffee. Creative Children “Read, Create, Innovate” in this workshop covering a wide range of sciences, such as chemistry, astronomy and physics. The programmeme is endorsed by the “Creativity Club,” which was launched by the Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalid Centre. Reading with a Paintbrush “ Artistic & cognitive glances” This workshop will serve as an introduction to colours, their psychological effects and aesthetic implications. The workshop will also display some of the colours used in children’s stories. Reading as Therapy This training workshop is intended to give children and their parents an introduction to the positive psychological effects of reading. The workshop will also review the different kinds of books that can contribute to a child’s self-composure. Colour and Read Drawing, painting and clay-art activities for all age groups. Reading Has Its Own Magic This independent reading programme will offer a collection of fascinating stories for all age groups to encourage a love of reading. 16 Reading I am an Author I can write, I am an Illustrator I can draw In our workshops we don’t simply read the book, we bring it to life! We turn this “learning” session into a “doing” session, making the drama and power of our lessons very real. Reading the Picture This distinctive workshop (slogan: “Read and Create”) is intended to give children an introduction to another type of reading, namely, the reading of pictures. Children are exposed to the skills of reading facial expressions and body language. Watch and Narrate Younger children will be bedazzled by the visual presentations in this workshop. Our Journey with a Book The theme of this independent reading programme is “Planting and Harvesting” and will offer a collection of fascinating stories for all age groups to encourage a love of reading. The Paths of Giving 5 Minutes of Giving His Highness, the President of the United Arab Emirates, deemed 2017 the “Year of Giving,” and this workshop is dedicated to teaching children the importance of charity using innovative teaching models for children of all age groups. Paper Clippings A variety of art workshops. I Know More “Think and Search” at this workshop about different types of child-friendly search engines and how to access to the world’s secrets through e-searching. Reading 17 The Treasure of Our Values This workshop (slogan: “Our Ethics-Our Lives”) will review the values that characterise UAE society and offer guidance on the need to preserve them. The country will introduce moral education as part of its curriculum in all schools next year. Book Reading Session with child author Anaahita Chauhan Anaahita, who wrote The Mystery of the Lost Plant when she was only eight will read then answer questions. This will be followed by the distribution of activity sheets related to the book. I Know My Rights This extremely important workshop is intended to give an introduction to children’s rights in conjunction with the first Charter of Children’s Rights launched by the UAE. The central element of the performance is clay, which will be modeled live out of layered sheets, piles and blocks by the artists of “Collective Kahraba”. Since 2006 the Lebanese performing arts company has sought to meet audiences wherever they are. They have performed across Europe as well as in Russia and Japan. Her latest book Haltabees Haltabees won the Berlin International Literature Festival Book Award (2015), while other titles have been translated into 20 languages. In 2007, Ms. Zaghir founded Al Khayyat Al Saghir Publishing House, which devotes special attention to picture books that are engaging, quality literature and aim to develop the Arab child’s artistic and social awareness. She is also the co-founder and curator of the International biannual children’s literature conference known as What a Story! Participants 47 Mohammad Abdul Halim This international leadership development specialist was named one of the 100 best global coaching leaders award in 2016 and won the executive coach of the year award that same year. Halim is a leadership development expert, an international executive coach, entrepreneur, writer, columnist & TV commentator and a member of the International Coach Federation. 48 Participants Marwa Karoura An international coach and member of the International Coach Federation, Karoura is also an Emotional Social Competency Inventory (ESCI) accredited assessor. The winner of the 2016 best executive coach of the year award is also a leadership development expert, inspirational speaker, writer, columnist and TV commentator and leadership assessor. Participants 49 Naseem ‘Alwan This Lebanese storyteller and librarian at the Public Library of Mtein graduated from the Higher Institute of Dramatic Arts in Damascus. Naseem believes that tales are not mere words and clowning intended to entertain children and adults, rather they denote history, culture and peoples’ way of life recounted by generations. Her activities include reactivating children’s theatre at the Public Library of Mtein. She is the author of two stories entitled Marzouk and Ma’touk (2012), and The Woolen Hat (2013) published by Asala Publishing House in Beirut. She has participated in numerous festivals. 50 Participants Khadijah Kudsi Ms Khadijah Kudsi is an acclaimed children’s author, filmmaker, entrepreneur, and community leader. Best known among her works is the bilingual Noura’s World series, which has delighted thousands of children throughout the UAE and around the region. Trained in information systems management, Khadijah is also an established organisational leader, working actively to promote the learning and welfare of children through a variety of school and after-school initiatives, including the Boy and Girl Scout programmes of the UAE. Originally from Saudi Arabia, Khadijah is a long-time resident of Abu Dhabi, where she lives with her husband and four children. She brings deep understanding of Arab tradition and culture and the creative energy and imagination that inspires children of all ages. Participants 51 Eric Deniaud The co-founder of Collective Kahraba, Deniaud is a graduate of the National University in the Arts of Puppetry in Charleville-Mézières, France. Since 2002, he has been acting, directing and set designing in many performances, especially those with puppets. He collaborates with companies in France, Canada, Vietnam, Japan and Lebanon. He co-founded Collective Kahraba in Beirut in 2007 and is involved in all its performances and international tours. Since 2011, he has been the co-director of Nehna wel Amar wel Jiran, a multidisciplinary festival organised by Collective Kahraba in Beirut. He will be co-directing the Hammana Artist House, an artist residency to be opened in summer 2017. 52 Participants Aurelien Zouki The co-founder of Collective Kahraba was born and grew up in Lebanon. After his theatre studies in Paris, Aurelien worked as an actor with different directors and choreographers in France, Europe and Lebanon. He moved back to Beirut in 2007 and founded Collective Kahraba, an artist collective with whom he creates several performances that tour locally and internationally. In 2011, he co-directed the Nehna wel Amar wel Jiran, an outdoor festival in Beirut that features 40 artists and attracts over 4,000 people. He will be co-directing the Hammana Artist House, an artist residency to be opened in summer 2017. Participants 53 Omar Khawaja Omar is a Muslim-American author/entrepreneur who was born in Saudi Arabia and has family roots in Pakistan. He grew up in New York and now lives in the Washington D.C. area with his wife, three young kids, and lots of noise. Omar received the 2014 and 2015 Moonbeam Children’s Book Awards silver medal for his debut book, Ilyas & Duck Search for Allah, and his second book Ilyas & Duck and the Fantastic Festival of Eid-al-Fitr. He is the first Muslim children’s book author to receive such a nationally recognised award. 54 Participants Anaahita Anaahita published her first book, The Mystery of the Lost Plant, when she was only eight years old. She intends to bring diversity to children’s books by bringing in children-authored books. Her message to all the children is not only to start reading and writing but also to let them know that they don’t need to wait to grow up to start working towards their dreams. They must actually start today, so they gain experience and expertise by the time they grow up. Her larger aim is to increase the interest and love for, and to provide access to, good books to every child in this world. With this intent, she has conducted reading sessions in schools, book fairs, literary festivals, and has donated her book in public libraries in the UAE. Participants 55
