A NOTE FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
Dear friend of Olney Theatre Center,
Since I came to Olney Theatre Center two years ago, we’ve made new plays a
vital part of each season. From last year’s Helen Hayes Award-winner Colossal to
next year’s world premiere of Carmen: An Afro-Cuban Jazz Musical, we take risks
– artistic and financial – on new work because writers help us to see our world in
new and vibrant ways, and because live theater has a particular power that urges us
to act on their vision. That’s because theater, more than any other art form, teaches
empathy: to be physically in the room with characters struggling to live better lives
demands our emotional attention. And when the artists involved are working at the
height of their powers, great reckonings are truly possible in little rooms.
That’s what we have here, in the first new play of our 78th season. Bad Dog is Olney’s
contribution to the citywide Women’s Voices Theater Festival, and I challenge you
to find a more empathetic play, or a more extraordinary group of actresses on stage
this fall. Jennifer Hoppe-House has written exquisite roles for six women – a rarity in
our field – and we are blessed to have with us the dreamiest cast you could imagine
to tell this wonderful story.
We’re also blessed to have my friend and colleague Jeremy Cohen here as our director. Jeremy and I go way back to our
comparative childhoods in Chicago, where we were both running small theater companies. But while I was programming
hits from off-Broadway, Jeremy was staking out ground as one of Chicago’s biggest new-play champions. That passion has
brought him to the Playwrights’ Center in Minneapolis, the country’s largest new-play development center. Jeremy has gained
the love and affection of artists in every part of this country for his talent, for his commitment to playwrights, and to his
vision for the field.
Bad Dog is therefore a fortuitous union of empathetic new play and artists working at the height of their powers. The story
of Molly Drexler, fallen off the wagon after 10 years clean and sober, and her dysfunctional family staging a dysfunctional
intervention, is filled with a brutal and hilarious honesty that hopefully touches all of you. None of us have a family exactly
like Molly’s, but I bet most of us have family members who use their compassion for us like a cudgel, or know us so well
that their love strikes our soft tissue like a hot poker. Few of us may be alcoholics, but many of us know the fear of failure,
the guilt of unintended cruelty, or the self-perpetuating draw of self-loathing. The end of Jennifer’s marvelous play is, I think,
open-ended: some of you will believe Molly is left in an emotional desert at its conclusion, but I suspect most of you will
find abundant reason for hope. The discussion about it between you and your fellow audience-members is what interests
me the very most.

WHY OLNEY THEATRE CENTER MATTERS TO ME
We have been Olney Theatre Center members for years and always enjoy
the variety of shows each season brings. The shows we have seen have
made us laugh, cry, and ponder about life. The Olney Theatre Center
staff always make us feel welcome and they value the feedback we
e-mail after every show. Last year, we did our estate planning and
decided to include Olney Theatre Center because we value not only the
entertainment but also the educational and outreach programs they

Totalitarians (Penny Easter) [Helen Hayes Award Nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress], Detroit
(Mary), Bright New Boise (Pauline), and Maria/ Stuart (Lizzie). She has also appeared locally in multiple
productions for Studio Theatre, Folger Theatre, Rep Stage, Washington Stage Guild, Round House Theatre
and Everyman Theatre. Regional credits include The Game’s Afoot (Madge) and All My Sons (Sue Bayliss),
both for Gulfshore Playhouse. She can be seen later this season in Between Riverside and Crazy at Studio Theatre and in
Mystery of Love & Sex at Signature Theatre.
Holly Twyford (Molly Drexler) was last seen at Olney Theatre Center in Noel Coward’s Present
Laughter and is delighted to be back. Ms. Twyford has appeared in over 50 productions with many of the
area’s numerous theaters including: Studio Theatre, Ford’s Theatre, Woolly Mammoth Theatre, Folger
Theatre, Shakespeare Theatre and Arena Stage to name a few. She has performed in theaters in New
York, Boston, Philadelphia, Santa Cruz, Red Bank, NJ and Milwaukee. Ms. Twyford received the Helen
Hayes Award for Outstanding Lead Actress for her portrayals of Juliet in the Folger Theatre’s production of
Romeo and Juliet, Diane in Little Dog Laughed at Signature Theatre, and Evelyn in Studio’s production of The Shape of Things.
She received the Outstanding Supporting Actress Award for a variety of roles in The Two Gentlemen of Verona at the Folger.
Ms. Twyford was the recipient of the Shakespeare Theatre Company’s Emery Battis Award for Acting Excellence for her

portrayal of Anna in Old Times and she is a Lunt-Fontanne Fellow. She will be directing Lemony Snicket’s Lump of Coal this
winter at Adventure Theatre-MTC.
Gladys Rodriguez (Sondra) After her debut season in Bad Dog performing for Orlando Shakespeare
Theater, Gladys Rodriguez is back interpreting the role of Sondra before the Olney Theatre Center audience.
Rodriguez is a seasoned and talented Puerto Rican actor who has played different characters, such as
Blanche Dubois in A Streetcar Named Desire and the leading lady role in August: Osage County. She
interpreted the main female character in the first Puerto Rican film nominated for an Oscar in the category
of Best Foreign Picture, Lo Que Le Paso a Santiago. Her experience encompasses all fields of acting in
theater, televised situation comedies, and drama. She is well known in many Spanish speaking countries and in 2005 she
made her incursion in the US film industry in Shortcut to Paradise, The Caller with Stephen Boyd, and recently, in a Hallmark
Channel production, Stranded in Paradise.
Carlos Saldaña (Cop/Kaufmann/Contractor) is honored to be making his debut with Olney Theatre

WHO’S WHO - CREATIVE
Jennifer Hoppe-House (Playwright)is a film and television writer (Nurse Jackie and Damages) and is currently working
on her second season as a writer/producer on Netflix’s hit series Grace and Frankie, starring Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda.
She began as a playwright in Texas and has written smaller pieces for productions in New York and Austin, one of which
was a finalist in the Actors Theatre of Louisville 10-Minute Play Competition. Bad Dog is her first full-length play. Jennifer is
a member of The Writers Guild West and the Dramatists Guild of America.
Jeremy B. Cohen (Director) is in his fifth season as the Producing Artistic Director at the Playwrights’ Center and previously
served as the Associate Artistic Director/Director of New Play Development at Hartford Stage from 2003 to 2010, where he
also directed several premieres. Other regional directing credits include productions at Center Stage, Alliance, Alley Theatre,
Goodman, Dorset Theatre, Steppenwolf, McCarter, Theater J, Victory Gardens, Actors Theatre of Louisville, George Street
Playhouse, Kansas City Rep, Repertory Theatre of St Louis, Open Fist, Theatre Latte Da, and Royal George. NYC/Off-Broadway
credits include: My Mother Has Four Noses (by award-winning singer/songwriter Jonatha Brooke), and The Adventures of
Tom Sawyer (New Victory); and workshops at O’Neill Playwrights’ Conference, New York Stage & Film, Pasadena Playhouse,
Denver Center, New Harmony, Bay Area Playwrights Festival and Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company. As Founding Artistic
Director of Naked Eye Theatre Company in Chicago, Cohen developed/directed more than 10 plays, including several premieres.
He has received numerous directing awards, an NEA/TCG Directing Fellowship, and a residency for his play 12 Volt Heart. In
2014 he directed the World Premiere of Brahman/I (Mixed Blood), Wild With Happy (Centerstage), and the World Premiere of
Joe Waechter’s Lake Untersee (Illusion). He’s currently in development on his new play Boys Will Be Boys.
Tony Cisek (Scenic Designer) has collaborated with Mr. Cohen on Wild With Happy at Center Stage and Hannah and Martin

Joshua Horvath (Sound Designer/Original Music) is an award winning Sound Designer/Composer/Music Producer. His
designs and music have been heard regionally at: Long Wharf, Hartford Stage, The Arena, Center Stage, The Alliance, The
Goodman, Steppenwolf, The Court, Lookingglass, Milwaukee Rep, McCarter, Cleveland Playhouse, Cincinnati Playhouse in
the Park, Kansas City Rep, The Lincoln Center, The Kennedy Center, The Mark Taper Forum, California Shakespeare, and
Oregon Shakespeare. Mr. Horvath has taught sound design for theatre and film at Northwestern University and DePaul
University. He is a four-time Joseph Jefferson Award winner and an LA Ovation winner, a company member of The House
Theatre of Chicago, an artistic associate of Lookingglass Theatre, and a collaborative partner with The Goodman.

Jason Loewith (Artistic Director) recently directed Olney Theatre Center’s critically acclaimed production of Carousel. Previous
productions include the NNPN Rolling World Premiere of Steven Dietz’s Rancho Mirage for Olney Theatre Center as well as last
season’s productions of Avenue Q and How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying [2015 Helen Hayes Award nomination
for Outstanding Musical]. Mr. Loewith won Lucille Lortel, Outer Critics Circle, and Jeff Awards for Best New Musical for Adding
Machine: A Musical, which he co-wrote with composer Joshua Schmidt (off-Broadway, 2008). His latest musical is Big Nate:
The Musical which premiered in 2013 at Adventure Theatre-MTC, co-written with Olney’s Associate Artistic Director Christopher
Youstra. Recent regional work as a director includes the world premiere of Broke (Alliance Theatre, Atlanta), Time Stands Still
(Everyman, Baltimore), Crime and Punishment, Working It Out (Center Stage, Baltimore), Adding Machine: A Musical (Studio
Theatre, DC), and a dozen plays for Chicago’s Next Theatre Company, where he served as Artistic Director from 2002-08.
Those credits include the Chicago area premieres of Dying City, Defiance, The Long Christmas Ride Home, and Fabulation. He
conceived and directed the world premiere of The American Dream Songbook, wrote and directed the world premiere of War
with the Newts, and produced Chicago premieres by Caryl Churchill, Suzan-Lori Parks, Carson Kreitzer, Sam Shepard, Dael
Orlandersmith, and many more. He is a three-time grantee from the NEA for Artistic Excellence, a recipient of support from
the Rockefeller MAP Fund and MacArthur’s International Connections Fund, and a TCG New Generations Future Leaders grant.
Jason joined Olney as Artistic Director in 2013 after serving four years as Executive Director of the National New Play Network.
Debbie Ellinghaus (Managing Director) joined Olney Theatre Center in August 2014. Prior to her appointment at OTC, she
was Director of Development for the College of Arts and Humanities at the University of Maryland, College Park, where she closed
significant gifts that helped to advance student scholarship and academic programming. From 2005-11, Ms. Ellinghaus was the
Senior Associate Director of Development at Yale School of Drama/Yale Repertory Theatre in New Haven, CT. At Yale, she was
part of a university-wide campaign that raised more than $3.8 billion and included transformational gifts for Yale Rep from the
Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and the Robina Foundation, which established the Binger Center for New Theatre. Additionally,
she raised funds for scholarship, theatrical productions, and facilities. In her role at Yale, Ms. Ellinghaus provided mentorship to
MFA candidates, many of whom are now leading major theaters across the country. Previously, Ms. Ellinghaus was Director of
Development at off-Broadway’s Jean Cocteau Repertory Theatre. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of
Maryland, College Park, and is a graduate of New Actors Workshop, a professional theater training conservatory founded by Mike
Nichols, George Morrison and Paul Sills. Ms. Ellinghaus currently chairs the Downtown Arts and Culture Commission in Columbia,
MD, an organization that works closely with Merriweather Post Pavilion to preserve its cultural significance in Maryland.

CONTEXT GUIDE
When Molly Drexler barrels her Prius through the wall of her living room, her private space becomes public
and her demons are on display for all to see. Her family members rush to Los Angeles to either “support” or “deal
with” her—however they individually classify it—and her ongoing struggle with addiction. Bad Dog may be a comedy
about the consequences of addiction, but it is first and foremost the story of a dysfunctional family. The immediate and
extended members of the Drexler family demonstrate a basic human desire to help those we care about in times of
need. Interventions and pleas for rehab can be successful routes to recovery, but sometimes they are not what an addict
needs to face hard truths.
Jennifer Hoppe-House, acclaimed television writer and producer, is returning to her theatrical roots at Olney
Theatre Center. “Her conflict is really that she has…two blurring instincts - one is to survive and be happy and the
other is to kill herself slowly; and I was thinking ‘I’ve seen plays where addiction affects family but…I was really
interested in how family affects addiction.” In this world, it is increasingly rare to encounter a person who has not
been affected by drug or alcohol addiction in some
way, whether through a partner, a family worker, a
co-worker, or an acquaintance. As the Drexler family
members learn more about each other in the aftermath
of Molly’s crisis, they find that they know even less
about how to find normalcy again. Their basic instincts
urge them to flock together and push Molly into an
eventual rehabilitation program; it never occurs to the
Drexlers that the foundation they are trying to provide
her is too riddled with cracks resulting from their own
troubles to actually give her support.
This production is part of the Women’s Voices Theater Festival in the DC area, showcasing more than fifty
plays by women authors that show all the stories they want to tell. In an artistic arena where stories tend to focus
on men and young women, it is essential to showcase a play like this, where multiple facts of everyday womanhood
are on display—the good, the bad, and the especially ugly. Molly and Abby’s living room is open to everybody not
just because of a massive hole, but because the Drexler family’s disputes and struggles are found in other living rooms
familiar to us.

mid-century open floor plan, Sherman Oaks, CA.
Calculations were made based on the aproximate specs of this model home,
as well as those for a 2008 model Toyota Prius. At the point of impact, the car
would have to penetrate 1/2” of vinyl siding, 2” of sheathing, t wo 6” studs
(perhaps southern yellow pine – placed aproximately 24” apar t), insulation, and
1/2” of dr y wall. Given the width of the car, it would likely have hit t wo of the
studs head - on for a clean break.
Treating the car like a non - crushable uniform object would lead to a relatively
low impact speed of 9.883 mph to cause this level of damage. The physics of
the crash are simple, the af ter- ef fects not so much.

Latecomers are seated at the discretion of the house manager. Please do not bring food into the theater (beverages are
allowed). All buildings are smoke-free. The use of recording
or photographic equipment during the show is prohibited.
Olney Theatre Center is not responsible for any items left on
our campus. All children, including babies, require a ticket.
We will ask parents to take their children to the lobby if
their behavior is disturbing patrons. Please turn off your cell
phone in the theaters.

Sign-Interpreted Performances
Sign interpretation is available for the third Thursday evening during a show’s run. The service must be requested
two weeks in advance and is based on the availability of
qualified interpreters. To request this service, please email

Audio-Described Performances
Audio-described performances are offered during the third
week of a show’s run on Wednesday evenings. This includes
pre-show program notes and descriptions of the action,
scenery, and costumes during pauses in the dialogue.
