A mission is a religious church or parish. The Spanish built missions on Georgia’s Barrier Islands from 1568 to 1684. They built them convert the Native Americans to Catholicism – want the Native Americans to assimilate or become like the Spanish. European Explorers How did the Europeans impact the Native American’s lives and culture? Europeans were amazed with Native Americans – Native Americans were very advanced. However, the Europeans still thought the Native Americans were “lower” than themselves. Native Americans were amazed with Europeans. – Had never seen men with white skin. Had never seen horses.
