 A Spanish explorer – came to North
America after exploring Cuba.
 Travelled through the southeastern
portion of the United States.
 Made it to Georgia in 1540.
 Interacted with Georgia’s Native
Americans – The Mississippians.
 Came in search of GOLD, but did
not find any.
 He died before he found any gold.
He never made it home. He died
somewhere near the Mississippi
River.

 The Spanish built missions on
Georgia’s Barrier Islands from
1568 to 1684.
 They built them convert the
Native Americans to
Catholicism – want the Native
Americans to assimilate or
become like the Spanish.

Americans were very
advanced. However, the
Europeans still thought the
Native Americans were
“lower” than themselves.
