Theatre Arts Department Presents EVERYMAN Director’s Notes Simplicity to complexity to simplicity – when I think back over this process I see that this has, in some very real ways, been the development arc of this production. On the face of it, this play is exceptionally clear about what it wants to do. Everyman is commanded to go on a journey toward the grave. He does, and as the day progresses he discovers who his real friends are. Simple. Deciding to set this 15th century English classic in contemporary Hamilton raises many questions for us. What might it mean to be Everyman here and now? What would Death look like? How might God manifest himself to humanity? What might an incapacitated Good Deeds look like? Do we have a contemporary version of the medieval scourge? These are complex questions, for which we propose some answers in this production. In the end, though, the play rests on the very human journey that Everyman goes on. He lives knowing, as we all do, that death marks the end of this part of existence. Each choice we make, each enacted cruelty, and each simple kindness, matters. And no matter how one reads the ending of the play the essential story withstands the passage of time as well as the winds of theological change. It is, simply put, a story about the Great Hope of all time, and of all ages. Raymond Louter Set Designer’s Notes How do you create a 21st century urban landscape for a Medieval Morality Play? This set was an attempt to find contemporary representations of a very medieval world. Instead of allegorical figures, we have graffiti. Instead of a setting that could be anywhere, we have a carefully selected landscape of Hamilton. And, like Everyman himself, it’s all under construction. The final result is a collaboration between a designer, an art class, a set photographer, a set painter and our department’s production team. See if you can find the characters’ names in the graffiti and try to identify the buildings. The answers are below. From left to right: Hamilton Street Railway/Hamilton Go Station, Cathedral of Christ the King, Stelco/Defasco Smokestack, Whitehern, Gore Park Fountain, McMaster Hospital, West Mountain with Sanitorium Cross *** No Photography of any kind is allowed during the play for reasons of Copyright.*** *** Please refrain from making noise by turning off cell phones, pagers, etc. *** Cast Everyman............................................................................................................Noah Hicks Messanger/Doctor...........................................................................................Philip Wonder God...................................................................Amie Vermeer/Joy Johnson/Terri Brunsting Death......................................................................................................Alicia Kruisselbrink Goods..............................................................................................................Amie Vermeer Fellowship..........................................................................................................Joy Johnson Kindred/Beauty.............................................................................................Nicole Dunham Cousin...............................................................................................................Kevin Lobert Strength............................................................................................................Chris Howlett Good-deeds....................................................................................................Terri Brunsting Knowledge.....................................................................................................Kaitlyn McGee Confession....................................................................................................Dunstan Gomes Five Wits............................................................................................................Aaron Craig Discretion..........................................................................................................Kevin Lobert Angel...............................................................................................................Amie Vermeer Crew Director....................................................................................................... Past theatrical exploits at Redeemer include Home in Alfalfa, The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged), Halo, The Tavern, and Lady Windermere’s Fan. Noah also briefly moonlighted as a stage manager for Antigone. He blames his father for getting him involved in theatre but knows that “blame” might not be the right word. Phillip Wonder (Messanger/Doctor) is finishing his first year at Redeemer and looking forward to several more. He has previously performed in The Crucible and Home in Alfalfa and is excited to be a part of another performance. Everyman is his second play on the Redeemer stage and he is honoured to be able to work with such a fine cast and crew. Joy Johnson (Fellowship, God) is excited to be a part of Everyman after her first mainstage performance in The Tavern. She is has been involved with the Theatre Arts Department as a Production Assistant for Home in Alfalfa and is a keen student of the theatre major program. She plans to continue acting in a professional sphere after her graduation from Redeemer University College in 2010. She would like honour her deceased Grammy, who introduced her to the theatrical world, and passed away on Valentine’s Day. Terri Brunsting (Good-deeds, God) is close to completing her Bachelor of Arts Degree here at Redeemer. Everyman is her third mainstage performance at Redeemer after performing as Nancy in Home in Alfalfa, and in The Tavern as an “honest ugly maid”. She is excited to be a part of this medieval morality play but is content to return to her coffee, music, movies, books, sleeping, family and friends after the production’s run. Amie Vermeer (Goods, God, Angel) is pleased to be returning to the Redeemer stage in this production of Everyman. Her love for acting and the stage has caused her to act in Halo, Antigone, and most recently Home in Alfalfa. Though she is enjoying business of the stage she is content to embrace the last few weeks of academia before the summer. Alicia Kruisselbrink (Death) is in her first year at Redeemer majoring in Psychology. She has returned to the main stage with increased enthusiasm after performing in last fall’s Home in Alfalfa. Her hobbies include improvisation, music, Dutch Blitz, and Facebook. She was very pleased to be able to bring her talent playing the flute to the musical score. She hopes to be a part of many other productions to come. Nicole Dunham (Kindred, Beauty) is a second-year theatre major at Redeemer and recently performed in Redeemer’s fall production of Home in Alfalfa. She has loved being a part of the theatre department and is excited to be in another Redeemer production. Nicole hopes that if the dialogue in Everyman makes your brain hurt a little bit you will enjoy the production just the same. Kevin Lobert (Cousin, Discretion) is in his fourth and final year at Redeemer with a major in Theatre Arts and a double minor in English and World Missions. He has been quite involved with Redeemer Theatre performing in Home in Alfalfa, The Tavern, Lady Windermere’s Fan, and The Tragedy of Dr. Faustus. His greatest theatrical feat, however, is being one of the founding members of The Essential Players and performing The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged) last spring at the Staircase Theatre in Hamilton. He thanks his family for all their support and his girlfriend for putting up with him as he works through his theatrical experiences. Chris Howlett (Strength) will graduate this year with a double major in Theatre Arts and Physical Education. He has been a part of a number of Redeemer plays, working as Assistant Director for Home in Alfalfa, lighting technician for NZR and Halo, and assistant stage manager and set painter for Antigone. He is very excited to explore the stage anew through acting. Through these experiences his time at Redeemer has been full, rewarding, and memorable. He would like to thank his fiancée, Jessica, for her love and support over the Redeemer years. Kaitlyn McGee (Knowledge) is in her second year at Redeemer working on a Certificate in Liberal Arts. This is her second play at Redeemer, her first being Home in Alfalfa. Her past theatre experiences include The Wizard of Oz, The Importance of Being Earnest, Us and Them, and The Dining Room. In the near future, Kaitlyn hopes to get into voice acting. Dunstan Gomes (Confession) is excited to be a part of his second show at Redeemer. He first performance was in Home in Alfalfa. He enjoys writing skits and doing performances at his church and other local areas. He is pursuing a double major in Theatre Arts and English and a minor in Religious Studies. Aaron Craig (Five Wits, Composer) is a second year student completing a Bachelor of Arts degree at Redeemer with a double major in Humanities and Theatre. He is very excited to be a part of Everyman and even more excited to leave his musical fingerprint on the score of this production. In addition to this production he has been busy working in Scott Fairly’s production of I Hate Hamlet. He hopes you all enjoy this production of Everyman and will return for I Hate Hamlet next week. Crew Bios Raymond Louter (Director) graduated from Dordt College with a B.A. in Theatre Arts in 1982 after which he entered the Master of Fine Arts programme in performance at York University in Toronto. Following the completion of his degree he played the role of the Schoolmaster in Two Noble Kinsmen at the Maggie Bassett Studio and the Hobo in Ten Lost Years at the Tarragon Theatre; and he began teaching at Redeemer College. In May of 1991 he completed a second Masters degree in Drama at the University of Guelph. In the past years he has directed many plays here but most recently: The Tavern and Antigone. Joseph Hamilton (Stage Manager) has been pleasantly surprised by stage managing this production of Everyman. He is in his third year and is eagerly anticipating his marriage to Diana Prins this May. In the business of his last three years at Redeemer, he has been keenly involved in numerous mainstage productions. He has been involved in theatre acting, assistant directing, publicity and now stage managing. He hopes everyone enjoys the show and will return next week to see the student production of I Hate Hamlet directed by Scott Fairly. David Vandersteen (Assistant Stage Manager) is in his third year with a major in Theatre Arts. His previous acting credits include Our Miss Brooks, Halo, and Home in Alfalfa. He has had a great time doing this show and hopes to survive so that he can do many more in the future. Laura Stewart (Production Manager) Laura Stewart is a perennial fixture at Redeemer University College, where she is finishing her B.A in Theatre and Religion & Theology with a minor in English. Laura has been challenged by her role as production manager. When not stuck to her laptop e-mailing people questions, Laura can be found singing with the Concert Choir, chairing the Church in the Box ministry at Redeemer, leading the arts team for the same ministry or eating. Ivan Stam (Set Construction) is a 4th year student at Redeemer. He has been a member of the production team for three years and has built six sets, including Everyman. He worked in home construction for seven years and now enjoys building things that need to stand up for just five nights. Ivan recently appeared in the HDCH production of The Matchmaker as Cornelius Hackle. Bethany McMurray (Costumes) is in her second year at Redeemer. Her first major production was Antigone. She has learned a lot about the power of drama throughout her involvement in theatre at Redeemer. Sheena Parent (Costumes) is a sophmore Pre-Seminary/Kinesiology Major. In the last few years, Sheena has recorded an album with her heavy metal band, Bvalkor, written a novel and adapted it to screenplay. Sheena alternates writing, recording a solo Bluegrass album, academia and working on a local horse ranch all in an effort to keep this rookie rodeo rider busy. Sharon Klassen (Set Design) is a professor in the Theatre Arts Department. Last spring, she designed the set for the Redeemer production of Antigone. She has also designed sets for The Babysitter at the Graduate Centre for Study of Drama at the University of Toronto and Gone the Burning Sun for Shadowlight Theatre Company. This set has been an exciting collaboration between the Theatre and Art Departments, including the students of ART 110 who designed and painted the graffiti, and Monika Hintz, who created the buildings from flats and photographs. Andrew Bergsma (Lighting Designer) has been the Technical Director for the auditorium at Redeemer for two years. He was first involved in theatre in his highschool as the Stage Manager. This is his first lighting design.
