Lesson Plans [March 10- 20, 2014] - Mr. Wahlstrom Collaborative for, Algebra 1 [Straughan, 2nd period [Red Day], and 2nd period [Gray Day], room 110], U.S. History [Smith, 3rd period [Red Day] room 108], World History [Baker, 5thperiod [Red Day], room 106]. [Gray Day] 3rd period, Resource, room 104 General [U.S.] History Monday 3/10/14 Class discussion and notes: 1). Under Lincoln’s plan, when could southern states set up a new government? 2). What did Johnson’s plan require of southern states? 3). What did the Radical Republicans want? 4). What happened to African Americans under Johnson’s plan to rebuild the South? 5). What rights did the Civil Rights Act of 1866 give African Americans? Students will answer questions about a letter from Harriet Jacobs, a former enslaved woman who wrote about sharecropping in the South following the end of the Civil War [Exercise 70]. Students will read a passage about Reconstruction and answer related questions. Also, they will use a timeline from 1863-1877 to identify key events during the period of Reconstruction [p. 97 & 98]. Students will complete the reading study guide Chapter 12 section 1, “The Politics of Reconstruction” where they will learn of Lincoln’s plan for readmitting Confederate states to the Union. Also, they will learn about Johnson’s plan and the congressional plan for Reconstruction. General [U.S.] History Wednesday 3/12/14 Class discussion and notes: 1). How did the Fourteenth Amendment protect the rights of citizens? 2). According to the Reconstruction Act, who would not be able to vote or hold office in the South? 3). Why did the House vote to impeach Johnson? 4).Who made up the Republican Party in the South? 5). Why did many white Southerners dislike people they called carpetbaggers and scalawags? Students will complete a challenge activity where they answer questions about Confederate states being readmitted to the Union [Exercise 71]. Students will read and answer questions about the section “Voices from the Past” which gives the account of a person who had been freed from slavery [p.211]. Students will complete the reading study guide Chapter 12 section 2, “Reconstructing Society” where they will learn about conditions in the postwar South. This will include conditions for former slaves and economic changes in the South. General [U.S.] History Friday 3/14/14 Class discussion and notes: 1). How did the Freedmen’s Bureau help African Americans after the war? 2). What kinds of jobs were open to African Americans in southern cities after the war? 3). How did the system of sharecropping work? 4). What did the Fifteenth Amendment say? 5). Why did Reconstruction end? 6). How did southern white lawmakers take away the rights of African Americans? Students will look at a diagram of Ford’s Theater and answer related questions concerning the assassination of Abraham Lincoln [p.99]. Also, students will review basic concepts of Reconstruction by answering provided questions [p.100]. Students will complete the reading study guide Chapter 12 section 3, “The Collapse of Reconstruction” where they will learn about opposition to Reconstruction, economic turmoil, and what brought Reconstruction to an end. General [U.S.] History Tuesday 3/18/14 Students will review their notebook including the words to know and the comprehension check activities. Students will complete the Chapter 11 review on pages 212-213 of the text which will include a vocabulary review, a chapter quiz, and the use of a timeline. Students will be given assistance in generating a study guide in class for the period of Reconstruction, Chapter 11. The class will divide into teams and play a review game in preparation for taking the test. General [U.S.] History Thursday 3/20/14 Students will take the Chapter 11 Test “Rebuilding a Divided Nation”. Students will copy the vocabulary words and definitions found on pages 218, 222, & 227. Students will use terms to complete the words to know activity for Chapter 12. As a class we will begin reading the first portion of the new chapter as time permits.
