AMALGAM “SILVER” FILLINGS
Thank you for your question about silver fillings. We hold ourselves to the highest standard of
providing the best quality oral health care for our patients. We are always striving to improve our
practice through continued learning, specifically evidence based dentistry. It is important to us that
we provide our patient’s with the knowledge to aid them in their oral health care.
There is a vast amount of information regarding dental materials used to restore teeth. Dental
amalgam or “mercury fillings” is one type of traditional dental material used to restore teeth where
cavities have been removed. Dental amalgam has been studied and reviewed extensively, and has
established a record of safety and effectiveness. Unfortunately, there is also a large amount of
misinformation regarding dental materials. We feel that scientific, evidence based research provides
the most comprehensive and reliable information.
Although dental research is continuing to provide new materials to use for the restoration of
teeth, the value of traditional dental materials chosen must also be taken into account. The
material chosen to restore a patient’s tooth depends on several factors individual to each treatment
situation. We feel it is important to have an open dialogue with our patients & parents to discuss
these factors to provide the best treatment.
As recently as 2009, the American Dental Association and Federal Drug Administration has
reaffirmed its position based on scientific research that amalgam is a safe and effective restorative
material for patients.
Please visit the American Dental Association website at www.ada.org which offers a vast amount
of information regarding your oral health. Specifically, the public resources section provides
information on the different types of dental materials to aid patient’s understanding.
We welcome you to always ask questions so that we may help you make informed decisions
regarding your oral health and treatment.
